Plants lay off workers despite pact approval
United Press International reports major steel producers began mass layoffs despite pact signs. Sharon Steel Corp in Mercer County Pa. started closing finishing operations cutting about 2000 jobs. National Steel Corp Pittsburgh laid off 3000 at Weirton and Steubenville plants. Republic Steel Corp reduced 1000 in northern Ohio. ARMCO recalled 1000 laid off earlier. US Steel in Cleveland saw no truck increase. Teamsters urged haulers to return after tentative deals with three firms, with a fourth possibly signing to end the strike. Some votes continued in Ohio.

Gasoline Shortage Hits Pennsylvanians Sunday
In Philadelphia, many service stations ran dry or closed this Sunday as drivers faced fuel shortages. Thomas Anderson, head of the Pennsylvania and Delaware Service Station Dealers Association, says about 10 percent of stations will remain closed today to conserve supplies. The association represents around 3,700 members in the two states.

Fire destroys vacant building and garage on Rets Street
A fire this morning destroyed a vacant two story building on Rets Street and an adjoining garage. Heat blew out windows in a nearby apartment building. Cause under investigation. The site once housed a fashion shop named Greenbush and more recently served as a youth gathering spot.
