United Nations sources say Secretary General Thant faces pressure to empower the U.N. peace force in Cyprus to use deadly force to prevent violence. He reportedly fears overstepping his mandate though alarm over fighting grows on the island.
Bishop Fulton J. Sheen and Alabama Governor George Wallace urged Congress to override Supreme Court rulings banning prayers in public schools. They testified before the House Judiciary Committee amid widespread Protestant church condemnation of proposed constitutional amendments. The remarks also touched on U.N. peace efforts in Cyprus as Greek and Turkish Cypriots resumed fighting near St. Hilarion Castle, prompting questions about UN force effectiveness.

Chicago UPI report says U.S. District Judge Richard B. Austin refused defense motions for a mistrial and to try Hoffa’s seven co defendants separately in the $20 million fraud case against TeamSTER President James R. Hoffa. Jury selection slowed as jurors were ordered to be guarded by U.S. marshals for the trial potentially lasting four months.
National Safety Council reports March highway deaths reached 3,420, up 7 percent from 1963, with January–March totals at 9,900, a 16 percent rise and a new first quarter record. President Howard Pyle urges local action to apply corrective measures amid ongoing increases. Travel rose 6 percent, but deaths increased 11 percent.
Federal prosecutors pressed a peonage case against tobacco farmer Robert Moultrie Cook in Florence South Carolina. He is accused of pistol whipping Max Roy McKenzie a 44 year old Black man and forcing him to work in the fields to maintain bondage. McKenzie testified in court while Cook denied the charge.
Vandals struck four Fenati Brick Co officials homes amid the strike. Mill foreman Teivo Tervo said intruders tried to burn a bridge to his farm, fired shots to scare them off, and left tires and painted papers. Sturgeon, Frye, Wilson reported window damage and police investigated. Fenati has been on strike since March 3.
In Pennsylvania primary results Gov William Scranton wins Republican presidential preference. Genevieve Blatt leads Democratic U S Senate bid while President Johnson tops Democratic presidential preference. Blatt ahead by about 4000 votes with most precincts reported.
Eastern European Communist chiefs informed Khrushchev they oppose any Moscow Peking showdown despite the current political quarrel. In separate brief, Gerald Zarrella, 28, sprained his right ankle playing ball, treated at New Castle Hospital and released.
More than 360 people gathered for the eighth annual Distinguished Citizens Award to honor 74 year old Owen Penfield Fox outdoorsman conservationist and writer for 36 years of community service in natureland and wildlife.
Western Pennsylvania sees mainly cloudy skies with scattered showers and little temperature change. Highs 50s, mountain valleys in the 40s. lows in the 40s. Lake Erie reports southeast winds 15 to 22 knots with occasional rain and fog. 24 hour stats show 75 max, 40 min, 0.88 inch precipitation. Fox honored by city officials for dedication to beautification and resource preservation.

Wilmington Area School Board proposed a 1 129 979 budget for 1964 65, up 102000 from last year. President John Greer said the plan, prepared at a special meeting, aims to raise teacher pay toward state schedules and covers 88000 more in transportation with a planned bus addition and a 12 000 increase over the current year.
Unofficial election returns show Ruth R. Crawford winning the Republican state committee seat with 6 977 votes over Nile J. Simpson 5 338. Thomas J. Fee leads Democratic committee race with 4 315 votes to Gregg 4 159. Crawford is from New Castle and Simpson from Shenango Township.
