Officials of the United Mine Workers announce a truce ending a coal mine stoppage. Mines to reopen Thursday morning as Southern operators join the plan to resume work. President Roosevelt’s proposed peace is accepted and labor peace restored despite earlier delays.
Apple blossoms appear in Lawrence County with dandelions in full bloom and local bird reports noting killdeer and other woodpecker relatives at Gaston Park. A highway department official Charles Rupp handles equipment and a motorist extinguishes grass fires sparked by a beer bottle, mistaken for spontaneous combustion.
Berlin reports German speed boats of the Jong class attacked the southeast coast of Britain under cover of a barrage from Jong-rwige guns. Several British speed boats of similar class were damaged or sunk while the German boats returned to base. No further details on damage were disclosed.

The constellation design aims to fly above 20,000 feet and would weigh 43 tons.

Lieutenants Kennedy Steiner and others will alternate shifts from 4 p.m. to midnight and midnight to 8 a.m. with several officers assigned as swing patrolmen to cover leaves and ensure daylight patrols. Specific beat assignments list officers by ward and role, with permanent day turns for several patrolmen and shifts adjusting to the new “new deal” structure.
