Alice Longworth argues in a Washington dispatch that the Roosevelt administration has diverged from Jeffersonian ideals and failed to propose concrete plans. She critiques unemployment, tax policy, and public spending, noting a budget imbalance and 12 million unemployed as signs of distress.
T Wilber McCullough won the Republican nomination for the General Assembly from Lawrence County first district with 2314 votes. Charles B. Mayne finished second, Grace Warner Crawford third, followed by C L McMillen and George L Lewis in the city contest. McCullough carried his home third ward by large margins.
With 54 of 195 precincts reporting in the 47th district comprising Beaver and Lawrence counties, incumbent Senator Alonzo S. Batchelor leads. Batchelor tally 4828 votes, Bennett 2530, Behnaman 1543. Batchelor leads in Beaver and Lawrence counties, and is a Beaver county native from Monaca.
Attorney Orville Brown of New Castle secures the GOP nomination for Congress in the 26th district. With 106 of 280 precincts reported, Brown leads 10,243 to 4,209 for Brandon and 3,23 for Harper. He carries Lawrence Beaver Butler counties early, setting up a decisive statewide race.
The Jordan State Game Farm prepares for hatching about 3 000 pheasant eggs on May 9 with 8 000 eggs in incubators. In Pottsville the Kleckner family six members perform in the band and orchestra. Croton band led by Prof Hoffmaster includes two younger Kleckner children. The News will soon publish reading suggestions for youths. librarian Alice Sterling curates them. Early polling shows light voter turnout with farmers plowing fields recently. in First Ward Precinct Two less than one-sixth voted by 1 PM.
U.S. weather statistics show a maximum temperature of 69 and a minimum of 47 with trace precipitation. River stage is 5.8 feet. Year ago the record had a max 83 and min 41 with no precipitation.
Early morning returns from 48 of 91 Lawrence County precincts show Assemblyman W. J. Eroe Jr leading H. L. Stewart 1548 to 1424 with many votes still uncounted Beaver County results awaited. Stewart launched late but campaigned hard.
Attorney Charles H. Young of New Castle and Dr. Robert B. Greer of Butler won the Republican delegate slots for the June national convention in Cleveland. In Lawrence County 47 precincts reported, Young led Greer by votes with 5263 to 4375 while James March trailed at 1549. Butler County results showed Greer leading Young, matching the home-county advantage for each candidate.
First honors for reporting election returns went to the second precinct of the seventh ward Tuesday night. At 7 16 the precinct reported the results in the race for the Republican nomination for General Assembly. The first precinct of the seventh ward followed in short order. For a complete return of both parties the third precinct of North Beaver township was the first reporting at approximately eight thirty.
King Fuad I died after a throat infection and a brief rally following a coma. Crown Prince Farouk, 16, set to leave England for Cairo with a regency likely to govern until he reaches age, as three officials including Prince Mohamed Aly and Mahomed Fakhry Pasha were named as potential regents.

A small crowd gathered outside The News office to watch returns and the primaries produced little excitement. Reporters note a lethargic mood and suggest much of the political energy will shift to the November election, leaving Tuesday's results largely uneventful.
Anna Torrio posted bail in cash totaling 100000 for her husband Johnny Torrio, ex-Chicago ganglord, who faces federal charges of defrauding the government of 250000 in alcohol taxes. The bail was posted in 97 thousand, four five hundred, and ten hundred dollar notes. Torrio's lawyers sought a bail reduction but faced opposition from federal prosecutors.
Governor Alfred M. Landon of Kansas is the choice of hundreds of Lawrence County voters for the Republican nomination. Despite Landon not being on the primary ballot, many voters wrote his name in across 91 precincts.
In the Republican primary, W. Sharp Fullerton of North Beaver township and Randall B. Luke of Ellwood City led a tight race for the Second District seat. After 18 precincts, Luke had 922 votes to Fullerton’s 807, with Ellwood City strongholds favoring Luke and rural votes still to report. Nearby, H. S. Gold and W. R. McKee trailed, not posing a threat to the top contenders.
Carmi Preston defeated Sherman K. Levine by 226 votes for the Democratic nomination to the General Assembly from the first district. Preston 1388 to Levine 1162 in a see-saw race that kept readers guessing after polls closed. James B. Kelsy of North Beaver Township was unopposed for a second term in the second district.
Republicans presented seven delegate candidates with one independent, Democrats offered sixteen with one independent. The slates drew the bulk of the votes, while no tabulation was kept of the overall results.
With 47 of 91 precincts reporting in Lawrence County at five this morning, Congressman Charles R. Eckert of Beaver County leads with 1786 votes to 1158 for P. A. Garrett. Beaver County is seen delivering a substantial Eckert majority. remaining precincts could push his Lawrence County lead over 1000.
Westminster College students backed Governor Alfred M. Landon for the Republican nomination with 117 write in votes from townspeople. Senator Borah drew 80 votes, Herbert Hoover 8, Frank Knox 2, and Arthur Vandenberg 1 in the Tuesday primary.
In Camden South Carolina on April 28 a $250000 jewel robbery at the winter estate of Ernest L Woodard retired Leroy New York capitalist and sportsman was revealed. The theft occurred March 28 from a dresser drawer box on the second floor while the couple were away at the Carolina Cup Steeplechase. No fingerprints or clues were left. A $5000 reward had been posted by a New York insurance company. The jewelry was insured for $180000.
James A. Farley national chairman and postmaster general predicted the Democratic convention in Philadelphia on June 23 would abolish the two-thirds nominating rule. He spoke in Washington noting the party aims to simplify its process and broaden candidate support.
In the recent Tuesday primaries many candidates ran unopposed and no vote tallies were published. William E. Borah attracted about half the votes for Republican presidential nomination while Alfred M. Landon received write in support. Frank L. Pinola faced Frank P. B. Thompson for state treasurer with Thompson drawing few votes. E. Arthur Sweeny had no opposition for auditor-general. Democratic picks favored Roosevelt with minor Breckinridge support. Ross was unopposed for treasurer and Warren Roberts faced light opposition for auditor-general.
