Former priest Anthony Scoblick one of the Harrisburg Six, free on bail, started a fast in front of the federal building in Harrisburg yesterday. The action coincides with a grand jury hearing witnesses in a further probe of protesters charged in a bombing kidnapping case.
Mostly sunny and mild conditions prevail with highs in the 50s to 60s across the region. Tonight rises in cloudiness with a chance of showers and lows in the 30s to 40s. Warmer with possible showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday, highs in the 60s. Weather stats for the 24 hours ending 7 am show a high of 55 and no precipitation. Shenango River at 4.73 feet. Secretary of State William P. Rogers told SEATO and reporters that the United States is on the final lap of withdrawing troops from Vietnam. He urged Vietnamization, spoke on China ping pong diplomacy, and outlined hopes to reopen the Suez Canal while pursuing Middle East peace talks.
About 1,000 demonstrators plan to lobby the Selective Service in Washington as part of a two week campaign against the Indochina War. The group delivered a list of demands to Selective Service Director Curtis Tarr, including a call to eliminate the draft or limit extensions to six months or one year.
In Ellwood City the AFL CIO Labor Council denounced a proposed 3600 expense account for state lawmakers. They will send letters to Representatives Fee and Fox and Senator Oesterling opposing the measure, arguing it inflates lawmakers' income and would escape state tax. The meeting also denounced Rep Fox and supported public works funding and charity contributions.
Pennsylvania will not require out of state employers to withhold PA income tax. Residents earning income in Ohio may receive a credit for taxes paid to Ohio. Secretary Robert P. Kane said he opposes double withholding and refunds will be issued for overpayments. 1971 PA tax returns align with federal filing season.
Reports on Operation Lam Son 720 describe a planned Allied push into the A Shau Valley with secrecy and restricted access. After April 17 announcements by President Thieu and General Abrams, little combat occurred and reconnaissance yielded few contacts despite claims of large enemy presence and multiple North Vietnamese units in the area.
Harrisburg officials extend the vehicle registration deadline to May 31 to honor new bicentennial license tags. Acting Secretary Jacob G. Kassab cites a 121 day 1969 delay from tag design changes and criticizes the archaic plate production system while urging modernization.
Washington official warns polio epidemics loom in large city slums this summer unless vaccination rates rise. Dr John J Witte of the CDC notes U S immunization fell from 87.6 percent in 1964 to 65.9 past year and only about half of children in slums over 250 000 were vaccinated in 1970.
