Tony Monde, a 27 year old Italian trackwalker, was wounded in a confrontation at Newport. Joe Pental, believed to be the assailant, was shot by Monde after a knife attack. both men were hospitalized with serious injuries, Pental in critical condition.

Baltimore Pier Collapse Kills and Injures Dozens
In Baltimore Maryland the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad pier at Locust Point collapsed today killing 40 to 50 and injuring 25. Four bodies were recovered by late afternoon as rescue teams searched the wreckage. Sixty-eight workers were on site when the disaster struck while crews investigated causes and conditions of the mud site and shallow foundation.

Frightened by a passing auto, a team hitched to a cab driven by Frank Seigle charged down a Pittsburg street hill. Near Thaddeus Stevens school they struck a telegraph pole, wrecking the carriage. Seigle escaped with minor injuries. One horse was fatally injured and to be shot. The carriage carried three small Italian children who were unharmed. The team belonged to C. S.
