A New Castle woman arrived at the courthouse for the election in well dressed attire. Her outfit loudly signaled support for many candidates, though none of her picks prevailed.
National forecast calls for rain and showers in the mid and lower Great Plains and parts of the Pacific Northwest. Elsewhere expect clear to partly cloudy skies. Winds through Western Pennsylvania warn of freezing tonight with mid 40s to 60s today and 20s to 30s tonight in lows. Shenango River at 7.0 feet. no precipitation reported in 24 hours.
Hubert H. Humphrey claimed his first presidential primary victory in a long career, defeating George Wallace, Edmund Muskie and George McGovern with strong black and labor support. Across the state he led delegates with 35 percent to Wallace and Muskie at 21 percent each, while McGovern trailed closely.
Rep. Thomas J. Fee of New Castle secured re election to a third term by winning Democratic and Republican nominations. He defeated Tony Pagley in the Dem primary and prevailed as a write in on the GOP ballot. Sen. Donald O. Oesterling and Rep. Donald W. Fox were also renominated. Unofficial counts show Fee leading Pagley 6 647 to 1 791 and Isabella 1 736 to 914 in the GOP race. Fox defeated James E. Barnett 3 778 to 2 280 in the 10th District. Oesterling led Butler County and Lawrence County tallies, advancing to fall contests with unopposed opponents.
Lawrence County Democrats chose incumbent State Treasurer Grace M. Sloan over Thomas M. Nolan in balloting yesterday. Sloan received 6,949 votes to Nolan's 4,611, while Robert P. Casey ran uncontested for state auditor general with 10,738. Republican results show Franklin McCorker with 8,571 votes for auditor and Glenn E. Williams with 8,672 for state treasurer, both uncontested.
Vote tallies show Frank M. Clark leading in the 25th District with 41 143 votes to Gary A. Myers 12 175. Democrats also report delegates Baldauff Gaul and Oesterling as alternates. State races list Donald Oesterling and W Thomas Andrews as top contenders for the State Senate, with Thomas Fee leading in the Ninth and Knechtel versus Fox in the Tenth. Republican delegates include D O Davies and Thomas E Shafer with alternates Satz and McConnell.
Gary A. Myers, 34, wins a Republican primary in the 25th district over Peter L. Wengryn by about 10 000 votes. Myers will face Democrat Frank M. Clark in the fall. Clark was unopposed in Butler conditions, with district totals showing Myers carrying Beaver and Lawrence counties heavily. Official results await recount board.
