A quarrel at Joe Vitrol's in Newport sparked a gunfight that left Italian laborer Joe Pental wounded in the bowels. Pental, a Chewton boarder at John Straw's, was transported to a hospital, with bullet location and prognosis uncertain. Witnesses refuse to name participants, hindering the case.
The exposition marks the first permanent English settlement in America with grounds overlooking Hampton Roads opposite Old Point Comfort. Word reached here that Rev William Fleming of Clarion Pennsylvania will accept the call recently extended by the Central Presbyterian church of this city. Formal acceptance awaited but expected soon with announcement to the congregation Sunday. Local members eagerly anticipate his pastorship.
