McCarthy shows strength as Clark defeats Dent in Pennsylvania

UPI reports Senator Eugene J. McCarthy posted a strong showing in Pennsylvania's presidential primary, outpacing expectations with 235,822 votes as 5619 precincts reported. Senator Joseph S. Clark won the Democratic nomination in the state, defeating Rep. John H. Dent amid a limited local campaign. Dent claimed victory potential from rural areas, while Nixon led the Republican vote with write-ins.

Gardner Edges Foht in Two-County Senate Race

Gardner, a Union Township teacher, won the two county 21st Senatorial District GOP nomination with 5 614 votes in Lawrence and 6 533 in Butler, beating Robert E. Foht who had 6 482 and 3 873. Foht’s defeat shakes GOP hopes as Oesterling ran unopposed for the Senate in Butler. Burger wins GOP Assembly bid in 9th District. Fee defeats three opponents in the Democratic side.

Variable clouds and showers across western Pennsylvania

The forecast calls for windy and cooler conditions in western Pennsylvania with a few showers mainly in the east and north. Highs will be in the 50s, tonight will be partly clear and cooler with lows in the 30s to low 40s, and Thursday expects mostly fair, cool weather. The UPI report notes a 96 degree high in Orlando and a 16 degree low in Raton, both from the U.S. Weather Bureau.

Voters OK all 5 Pennsylvania amendments in primary

In Pennsylvania a 94 year old constitutional charter was revised as voters approved five amendments covering judiciary unified system local government home rule finance and legislative apportionment. Totals showed strong support in suburban Philadelphia and Republican counties, with Leyerence and Fayette voting against all five.

Tornadoes leave path of death in Ohio River Valley

Tornadoes from the Southwest cut a 125 mile path through the Ohio River Valley killing 12 in Kentucky and Ohio. Nearly 200 injured. hundreds homeless. Falmouth Dover and Wheelersburg hardest hit with many homes damaged or destroyed and schools and churches struck.

Westfield Grange Postpones Community Literary Program

The community literary program planned for tomorrow at the Westfield Grange has been postponed with another date to be announced later. South Viet troops to begin trial combat duty

Washington reports that U S plans to shift war burden to South Vietnamese units on a trial basis. If successful, more Vietnamese troops will assume key combat roles while American forces, about 549 500 strong, stay in place in reserve during a lengthy testing period. Commanders in Vietnam will decide when to start the transition.

In Dalton Georgia Congressman Clark wins a decisive primary, defeating Steve Zoccoli 32 974 to 5 826 across Lawrence Butler and Beaver counties. Republican nominee Richard L Doolittle also wins over John Loth, setting up a November clash. Ray case mentioned briefly with prison talk of a King assassination bounty.

U S air officials halt combat flights of F111A jets after third loss this month. In Mekong Delta provinces ground forces report heavy fighting with 111 Communists killed, including 95 in three provinces. In Binh Duong 268 villagers questioned after ambush as 272 detainees held. Army plans to unlimber heavy weapons in Korea defense

UPI reports the U S Army intends heavy use of armored and mechanized troops to counter North Korean incursions into South Korea. One armored division from Fort Hood Texas could lead the force if large reinforcements are required to defend the border as pledged by President Johnson. The 5th Mechanized Division from Fort Carson Colorado is partly assigned to Vietnam but the rest could be stood by for Korea if needed.
