Shenango High student Dave Carson won first place in the scale division at the 31st National Model Airplane championships at Heaview. He built an eight and a half foot plane, worked on it for eight months, and traveled 500 miles with his father as 2,000 participants from across the country entered 35 divisions. The craft cost about 75 dollars and used a three quarter horse rotor with methanol and castor oil fuel. Carson, a junior, belongs to the Sew Castle Filte Kings model club and has built planes for three years.
