City relief employees face cancellation next week as council weighs a $1.00 per man weekly rise in workmen's compensation insurance. Fifty men already at city jobs would incur higher costs. council seeks input from state officials while delaying retroactive policy changes. Continued on page six.
Western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio residents, many from New Castle and Lawrence County, visited the Pymatuning dam on Sunday. The dam nears completion with a large lake forming behind it. gates and gate house not yet finished. Top roadway and stone retaining walls under construction. Dusty unpaved Jamestown road carried heavy traffic. locals urge paving for future use.
Mercer county officials met in Sharon to study a possible diversion of Pymatuning dam water to the Mahoning river to aid slackwatering of the Beaver Mahoning system. A committee will assess impacts on Shenango valley and feasibility, with New Castle official Howard B Richards calling the plan impracticable and likely impossible.
The Washington conference expands to include Edouard Herriot of France and Richard Bennett of Canada as talks focus on currency stabilization, disarmament, debts and trade. Leaders expect a joint meeting with President Roosevelt, Premier MacDonald and Herriot to occur tomorrow as they align on global economic measures.

In Washington on April 24 administration forces pressed for an early Senate vote on a sweeping inflation mortgage and farm relief bill. The measure would expand currency by up to 12 billion dollars, remonetize silver, and allow price supports across major farm sectors while offering mortgage relief through a 2 billion bond issue and a 200 million RF C fund to refinance foreclosures. The farm components cover wheat cotton tobacco corn hogs dairy and sugar with broad price and policy provisions.
A fire at the Knobloch home on 105 South Vine Street destroyed a frame barn believed caused by children with matches. Loss was $500 insured. Traffic jams hindered fire units as Croton truck No. 3 axle broke, No. 5 ditched. Steven Kleckner Jr. freed a pony and chickens from the burning barn.
U S weather reports for the 24 hour period ending at 9 o'clock this morning show a maximum of 60 and a minimum of 30 with no precipitation. A Sunday period records a maximum of 51 and a minimum of 25 with no precipitation. river stage is 7 feet.
An auto traveling near Leeper Pennsylvania struck a sow with eight piglets causing a wreck that killed three people, including Mrs Ruby Black 21 and her two month old son and Miss Matilda Trumbull 15, with four others injured. The sow also died in the crash. Cecil Black 27 husband of the mother and three other children were injured and expected to recover.
Governor White approved a clemency hearing for Tony Rotunno and Ralph Atterholt, convicted for the July 4 Newton Falls shooting of Marshall Scott Vasbinder. They face execution by electric chair Friday after losing their Supreme Court appeals. the parole board hearing is set for 3 p.m. tomorrow in Columbus.
Fifty jurors reported this week at common pleas court and answered when called by Deputy Prothonotary Jack Edgar. Only two requested excusal, granted to J Newell McKibben of Pulaski and Ira E White of Slippery Rock township.
Jack Glazier thirty ended his life after failing to reconcile with his divorced wife. He drank poison in his New Castle room and died at the hospital after visiting his former wife at 616 Raymond street. A note directed police to contact Mary Ellen and locate the wife. Continued on Page Two.

The Tri State Typographical Union Conference opened with a banquet at The Castleton Saturday evening hosted by Local No 270. More than 100 delegates and guests attended including Mayor Charles B Mayne and local printing firm representatives. The dinner at 7:30 was followed by music and a toast from W G Armor who then introduced Mayor Mayne.
Dom inick Albanese, 56, of Fourteenth Street West Pittsburg is in critical condition at New Castle hospital after attempting self destruction with a .38 revolver. He fired two of four bullets into his side at 7 PM Saturday night, room upstairs at Samuel Ashiona’s home. A lead bullet was found flattened on the floor. he was rushed to hospital. Constable Walter Bannon reported the incident.
London April 24 violence flared near the German embassy amid anti German boycott protests. Seaman William Dunlee, 32, remanded to Bow Street police court for allegedly throwing a bottle with the inscription Hitler, the butcher, you have gone too far.
County Farm Agent H R McCulloch expressed that Sunday morning’s freeze did little damage to the fruit crop. He noted a seven point dip below freezing, blossoms not yet far enough along to suffer much harm, though some stems may have shed fruit later. Full extent will take days to determine.
The traffic signal at East Washington Street and Croton Avenue is inoperative after several days due to broken springs and parts. Parts were sent to the factory for repair and are due back soon. Officers will direct traffic during peak hours in the interim.
