Junkyard fire sparks toxic fume scare in Union Township
A battery case blaze at New Castle Junk Co. on U S 422 West prompted Union Township Fire Department to shelter residents and evacuate nearby workers. CHEMTREC advised self contained breathing gear and window closures while state and local agencies checked for pollution. The six hour fire led to one injury from a scuffle and multiple citations at the scene.

Mohawk budget proposes 2 mill tax increase in tight vote
Mohawk Area School Board approved a 7.9 million dollar proposed budget by a 5 to 4 margin. Members voting yes were Boyer, Butch Jr., Weber, Spohn and Cearfoss. no votes came from McAnlis, Penwell, Vrabel and Laughner. The plan, to be displayed for a month, forecasts local state and federal funds including 3.086 million from local taxes and 4.857 million from state sources.

Supreme Court Upheld Georgia Death Penalty Ruling
The Supreme Court, in a 5 to 4 decision, ruled that Georgia’s death penalty is not racially discriminatory. The decision affirmed the 11th Circuit and rejected claims that Warren McCleskey’s sentence was based on race. McCleskey, a Black man, was sentenced for the 1978 killing of white officer Frank Schlatt in Atlanta during a furniture store robbery.
