In Seville Jacqueline Kennedy watched a bloody bullfight from a box as a picador and matador faced a slow, less brave bull. The widow gasped and covered her face while critics noted the fight’s brutal moments and the Humane Society questioned public perception.
Lawrence County Boroughs Association planners meet county commissioners to discuss 1966 liquid fuel allocations to municipalities. Officials fear no funds this year due to bridge repairs, but Commissioner Ray Bailey says allocations await state payments in June and will be clarified at a township convention.
The House Appropriations Committee wipes out Johnson’s proposed farm program reductions citing possible food shortages. It approves a 6.9 billion dollar farm bill and predicts political fights over education funding while warning hunger and poverty could rise globally. Also reports extreme temperatures with 88 degrees in Dothan Alabama and 20 degrees in Butte Montana.

The Neshannock School Board introduced a 1966 67 budget of 1 235 937 with a four mill tax cut from 47 to 43 to offset higher reassessed township values. Revenue is projected at 1 225 448 with the balance covered by an year end surplus. Major increases come from bus purchases and teacher and staff raises.
A Lawrence County comprehensive report on facilities for exceptional children was endorsed by the county school board before submission to the state. The document covers history current status and two year recommendations including adding a third psychologist and establishing a child guidance clinic with a social worker psychologist reading expert and consulting optometrist and psychiatrist.
U S Marines with air and artillery support trapped and killed more than 500 enemy near Quang Ngai City about 335 miles north of Saigon. Commanders counted 322 bodies in the hills and paddies and estimated 200 more dead in a day and a half of fighting.
News auditor R P Rhodes of The News Co died at 4 15 a m in Jameson Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born December 22 1895 in Warren Ohio and married to Edna Dykeman. Surviving are his wife a daughter Jane Bates two sisters and two grandchildren. Funeral arrangements at Leyde Tanner Mortuary with service Sunday at 2 30 p m. Interment in Grailland Cemetery. John Joseph Mastropietro 3 injured after falling from a stool at 931 Clarence Ave treated at St Francis Hospital and released.
The 65 year old Marcel L. de Rudder, an Illinois coal miner, survived the first successful artificial heart implantation. He remained unconscious with doctors fearing possible brain damage. Dr. Michael DeBakey led the five hour operation and reported the left ventricular bypass functioning, heart rate at 85, and stable blood pressure as the team monitored his condition.
Western Pennsylvania sees mostly sunny conditions in the north and partly cloudy skies in the south. Cooler with a high in the 50s, tonight partly cloudy and cool with lows in the 30s north and 35 to 42 south. Saturday looks partly cloudy and warmer.
