The shootings occurred after a dispute over Grant parish cattle dipping with range riders fired upon and killed by an ambush from a high powered rifle.
President Roosevelt arrived in Fall River on a funeral train to accompany the body of his loyal secretary Louis Howe to burial. Howe, a devoted aide for 26 years, left his only friend in Roosevelt, reflecting a rare bond formed since 1910 when Howe left journalism to back the rising politician from Dutchess County.
Washington April 22 The Department of Justice announced a new offensive against Alvin Karpis Public Enemy No 1 offering a five thousand dollar reward for his capture amid escalating efforts to arrest the fugitive gang leader.
Mrs Belinda McMillen Campbell aged 98 died at 202 North Walnut New Castle at 1 30 this morning widow of David I Campbell born February 20 1838 in South Jefferson street home of White and Sarah DuShane McMillen. She lived all her life here witnessed New Castles growth and resided at North Walnut for 51 years. Surviving are two sons Joseph T Campbell and John F Campbell four nieces and one nephew. Funeral Friday at 2 30 from the residence with Dr C B Wingerd in charge. Interment Oak Park cemetery.
Ethio pian forces claim victory after a bloody all day clash yesterday repelling Italian columns from Dessye as they pushed toward Addis Ababa. Ethiopian troops held Tamba Burr a rugged escarpment, the only major natural obstacle between the two cities.
Westminster College hosts a mock Republican convention in progress to nominate a presidential candidate. The Tuesday session featured debate on the platform with a majority report backing neutrality, preparedness, debt relief, child labor amendment and a balanced budget, while a minority report differed on war relations.
Judge W Walter Braham refused to quash an indictment against John D Seevers for the murder of his sister in law Katherine Rodgers. Seevers already serves a life sentence for the murder of his wife Estelle Seevers in the same incident near Cleveland. The July 25 1929 shooting on the New Castle New Bedford road left one wounded boy.
Pittsburgh April 22. More than a month after Patrolman John Sellman 41 drowned in the Monongahela River during the St Patrick s day flood his body was recovered near the Riverton bridge. Two youths who found the body still wore the police uniform and will collect the reward offered for the recovery.
Investigators concluded the 2000 foot death dive of James Dods, 29, a student pilot at Honolulu airport, was a deliberate suicide, not an accident, after he took off in a private monoplane without warming the engine and plunged straight down.
Washington April 22 Congress faces a possible extension to complete its agenda while the two major parties nominate in 1936. Administration leaders seek adjournment between June 1 and 5 as Roosevelt pushes a new tax bill and a 1.5 billion relief fund. If kept, lawmakers would stay through the conventions in Cleveland and Philadelphia, a reprise of 1932.
The House Ways and Means Committee filed a formal report recommending passage of a new tax bill with an estimated first year yield of 803 million dollars. New Castle will take its high school band and a group of solo and ensemble contestants to the state public school musical contest at Pottsville Pennsylvania on April 24 and 25. Funds are raised for three buses. The solo and ensemble group departs Thursday at 7 30 am and the band group follows Friday at 7 30 am.
Rescue teams broke through the last rock barrier at Moose River gold mine finally reaching trapped Dr. D. E. Robertson and D. Alfred Scadding after eleven days. A third miner Herman Magill died from exposure and starvation, while the two men received first aid and awaited surface transport as emergency crews brought down stretchers.
Fifteen year old Mildred Palmer of Gettysburg is in critical condition after leaping or falling from the Culp's Hill lookout tower on the Gettysburg battlefield. Police say she chased two girls after school yesterday and offered no explanation.
Sharon Pa April 22 The town moves to rebuild its business district after a blaze caused nearly 1 million dollars in damage. The Protected Home Circle home office suffered 650 thousand dollars in losses but will rebuild immediately. Other damaged buildings’ owners also plan rapid reconstruction.
Firefighters were called to the Pittsburgh Coal & Junk company at 701 Moravia street at 10 30 this morning to extinguish a small chimney fire caused by an overheated stove. Damage was slight.
