A devastating fire at Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus, April 2, left over 300 dead and 157 injured. Prisoners, reportedly trapped and panicked, caused a blaze believed incendiary in origin. Emergency crews, more than a thousand police, fire, and ambulance units responded amid chaotic scenes.
The London Naval Treaty was signed today at St James Palace ending the conference after thirteen weeks since its January 21 opening in the House of Lords. Prime Minister MacDonald presided as the five delegates affixed their signatures to advance disarmament efforts.
In Columbus on April 22 state and county officials clashed over who should lead the investigation into the Ohio State Penitentiary disaster that killed 317. Article one limits replacement of capital ships during the treaty life ending December 1 1936 and allows France and Italy to build replacement tonnage under the Washington treaty. Article two details ships to be scrapped with three by the United States.
The recent B R and P railroad acquisition by the B and O system is part of a planned merger of smaller lines in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to form five trunk routes to the Atlantic coast. The plan aims to make New Castle one of the era’s most important railroad terminals.
Elmer T. McCleary, 51, president of the Republic Steel Corporation, died at South Side City hospital Youngstown after a one week illness. He underwent surgery for intestinal trouble last night but did not recover. Cyrus S. Eaton and James A. Campbell were at his bedside.

Columbus reports identify Mike Lewis as a possible former resident among Ohio State penitentiary fire victims. Lewis, linked to a 1929 Weble Baking Company robbery in Youngstown, confessed involvement while the other two assailants fled. Judge George H. Gessner sentenced him 10 to 25 years in Columbus. other suspects remained at large.
