Harrisburg report says Welfare Secretary Helene Wohlgemuth dismissed Polk State School and Hospital superintendent Dr James McClelland after finding a restrained resident. She defended the action as necessary, citing public safety and humane care while acknowledging potential political backlash and the need for public discussion on cage use.
Thousands of food products including frozen dinners for United Airlines are recalled due to possible botulism contamination from Fran Mushroom Co of Ravenna New York. The firm’s mushrooms were used in pizzas bagels beefsteaks shish kebabs and more totaling about 72 528 tuna noodle casseroles distributed to A and P outlets. No injuries reported yet and it is unclear how many products remain in shelves or have been consumed.
The News reports windows at Pri-Way Self Serve Shoe Mart, 900 Wilmington Ave., and Monica Beauty Salon, 204 W. Moody Ave., were damaged by firecracker like bombs Tuesday night. Arthur H. Bremer, convicted assassin of George Wallace, is in protective custody in an isolation cell at Maryland penitentiary after Maryland officials received a telegram warning of a possible threat to his life. Warden Gerald H. McClellan said Bremer was moved from the general inmate population and understands the measure is for his safety.
Pittsburgh unions say Three Rivers Stadium groundskeepers approved a wage contract ending a four day strike. The 28 workers, represented by Teamsters Local 250, backed the pact overwhelmingly. Picket lines blocking deliveries were removed after afternoon talks.

The Federal Reserve Board allowed seven of its twelve banks to raise their discount rates from 4.5 to 4.75 percent effective Monday, the third rise this year. Officials called it a passive adjustment and said no further borrowing costs would rise. banks affected include Philadelphia through San Francisco with others expected to follow.
Julie Nixon Eisenhower and David will be in Pittsburgh for the American Patriot Awards honoring President Nixon and Mrs Nixon. The $1000 plate dinner is by the Pittsburgh Committee of ’76 with 76 hosts including Abel of United Steelworkers and ex-Steeler Brady Keys. Proceeds benefit Ray Srouts of America.
