UPI reports Justice Department findings from a 12 year crime survey showing more than half of the roughly 1.2 million annual robbery victims are physically attacked, with about one in twelve seriously hurt. The study details victim profiles, weapon use, and financial losses.
West Penn Metal Printing Inc. won state approval for an 87500 loan to install air pollution controls at its Shenango Township plant, avoiding a 10000 fine and 13 potential layoffs. Stephen J. Craig said the DCA approved the loan the same day, aiding the township’s revolving loan program under a 1985 community development grant.
President Raul Alfonsin personally negotiated the peaceful surrender of rebellious officers at Campo de Mayo, ending the mutiny and signaling a purge of the armed forces. He met Lt. Col. Fire crews battled a liquid styrene leak and runaway reaction near Ashland Chemical Co in South Philadelphia. Two interstates 76 and 95 were closed, evacuated facilities reopened by mid day, with a small crew on standby as the tank cooled. No injuries reported. EPA noted the gas irritant but not toxic.
The death notices report Leonard E. Hughes age 42 of Callensburg Pennsylvania died April 20 1987. Also listed is Lester W. Foreman age 65 of Portersville and Mrs. Thomas L. Hanlon age 71 of 759 Addis Street.
