Laurel student wins top FFA award and scholarship

Robert Boak of Laurel has earned an all expense paid scholarship to the National Youth Institute in Lincoln, August 5 to 16, as the top FFA student among 50 Nebraskans and 49 others nationwide. He is treasurer of Laurel FFA and active in 4-H, Willard Grange, Mt. Herman Church, and the local farm family operates a roadside market and retail produce route on a 330 acre farm.

Killer tornado devastates Greenwood Arkansas town

A killer tornado ripped through Greenwood Arkansas killing at least 14 to 17 people and injuring many more with about 20 missing. The storm damaged the town center and a courthouse, with schools and homes leveled as Gov. Rockefeller promised aid and state officials prepared to travel to the scene.

Thieves Steal 925 Dollars In Items From Home

Insurance firm reports valuables valued at 925 dollars taken from Mrs. Alice Allen at 805 Chestnut Street while she was hospitalized on March 3. Missing items include coins jars three watches pins a tie clasp a pin three suits shirts and coats with no sign of forced entry. A separate theft at 4 KW Tool and Die Co 108 Elm Street involved a 100 dollar typewriter with entry by broken glass. The Last of the Visitation Program is set for 8 30 p.m. Monday at Eastbrook Grange Hall conducted by Plain Grove Grange.

Massive southern Vietnam raids mark second straight day

U S pilots flew 160 missions in the southern panhandle of North Vietnam the heaviest single day of the war in that region. Navy aircrews hit around Dong Hoi and Vinh destroying bridges boats and trucks while F111A jets attacked a highway bridge complex and weather limited visibility. Ground forces moved toward Khe Sanh despite an ambush as Marines maintained the vital supply route.

Prison escapee hunted as killer of Dr. King

FBI identified James Earl Ray, a Missouri prisoner escapee, as Eric Starvo Alt in the search tied to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s death. Agents matched prints from over 53,000 criminals confirming Ray’s identity while pursuing leads in Mexico and the southwest United States.

Second Bell union to strike

The Federation of Telephone Workers of Pennsylvania says it will strike next week if no contract is reached with Bell Telephone Co of Pennsylvania. The 12,830 members are already on picket lines with the CWA, and a midnight deadline was set. Negotiations in Philadelphia focus on a wage reopener clause, while Bell reports limited impact on customer calls. Many employees kept to picket lines across plant, accounting, and commercial staff.
