More than 200,000 Bell Telephone and Western Electric workers walked out in nine states and the District of Columbia as the Communications Workers of America pressed for higher wages and wage reopener clauses. In New Castle, about 120 operators and 28 business office staff joined the picket line, halting many calls requiring operator assistance while dial services remained largely unaffected.
