Representative Aldrich, backing tariff use, presents 1907 import data and expenditures to show tariff revenues cover government needs. He opposes the Bailey bill and contends consumers should bear freight costs, using comparisons and estimates to bolster his case.
Estimates 1910 tariff revenues from senate plan at 13 million more than under Dingley. Notes 1907 actual revenues at 332 million and says 2 percent Panama bonds lost par value. Urges 3 percent interest on bonds and criticizes last year's appropriations as unnecessary excess while opposing new income or inheritance taxes.
In the opening Senate tariff debate Senator Nelson W. Aldrich argues the Payne tariff bill as amended would fund government on a liberal scale. He cites potential $50 million last-year savings and outlines proposed changes to dutiable value, collection efficiency, and a customs court to boost revenues.
Mrs. Sarah Kennedy of near Mc Connells Mills received a telephone message Monday morning that her son Fred Kennedy had shot himself at Orangeville Ohio. The bullet entered his breast just above the heart in a personal crisis. He was about 35, reared at McConnells Mills, known in Slippery Rock Twp Portersville area. He left home ten years ago to seek better prospects and was recently married. His mother, aged and grieving, could not visit him. his brother Isaac went at once. The exact cause remains undetermined.
The New Castle Ladies' auxiliary of the Grand Army will be instituted tomorrow at 2 PM in the city building. Mrs Hays of Philadelphia will preside and speak on the work done by auxiliaries elsewhere. The group, recently formed, begins with about 60 wives of G A R men and aims to cooperate with their husbands on grand army matters.
The grand jury of Mercer quarter sessions met in the afternoon to consider abduction charges against James H. Boyle and Mrs Boyle. Other cases are to be passed on, and the abduction case will not be considered until Friday. A preliminary hearing has been waived by the defendants.
David Spiker of New Wilmington Junction died after attempting to move a downed Western Union telegraph wire in a recent storm. Frank Gillen and J C Smith helped divert current but Spiker, 39, was already beyond help. Gillen’s son was shocked. coroner and doctor attended. Spiker leaves a wife, four children, and eight siblings. Funeral at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the family home with interment in the Amish cemetery.
Mrs Ellen McKelvey of New Castle died in Detroit after drinking carbolic acid. Her sister Mrs D H Williams of Croton Ave New Castle learned of the death from The News. The McKelveys separated after coming to New Castle from Ellwood City. Police seek motive while two unidentified informants withheld details in morgue investigation.
Joe Jeanette of New York stopped Sam McVey of California in the 48th round after oxygen was pumped into him by his seconds. The fight in Paris drew 2,500 spectators and was hailed as one of boxing historys greatest battles with both fighters displaying remarkable courage.
Shenango presbytery may consider admitting evangelist D. M. Conn of Sandwich Illinois at its Tuesday meeting in Wampum. Conn is planned for a month of church work here after his notable success at the Third U P church last year. Timing this summer or early fall remains undecided.
New Castle street car workers report a peaceful path to resolving wage scale disputes with Mahoning and Shenango Valley Railway and Light officials. Turn men met Monday at Trades Assembly hall with early and late shift groups, awaiting results. A union leader plans to present outcomes to Youngstown officials midweek for a follow up meeting with company officials.
A mob of about 100 men hanged J. B. Miller FE B Brown J. W Allen and Joe Allen in a Pontotoc county jail breakout in Ada Texas. The quartet were believed cattlemen from Canadian Texas held for the February 27 murder of U S Marshal A A Bott.
Nine jailed trespassers were ordered to work on the streets by Judge Porter as an alternative to further county costs. The move cuts county expenses and could turn these prisoners into a small labor force, with some set for release by next week.
An attempted theft of a West Penn line locomotive in Butler left the engine stolen from local yards and run onto the road. Police and a pursuing officer halted the vehicle before a collision, with the engine recovered and no clues to the thieves.
John Needham of New Castle pleaded guilty before Squire Jones to shooting at Detective Thomas Hamilton of the P. and L. E. with intent to kill. He was bound over to the common pleas court in 400 dollars and jailed if bond defaults. Needham, in custody, was beaten into submission before the arrest could be completed. He says he has a wife and family in New Castle.
David Cooper of North Jefferson Street and Andrew McKinney of Clarksville were admitted to Shenango Valley hospital for treatment. McKinney is the father of R. A. McKinney of the New Castle notion company.

George Gettings, the young victim badly hurt Friday after being struck by a car on Croton avenue, is at New Castle hospital and is reported to be progressing well.
Judge Taylor issued a temporary injunction barring Tony Ross from further boxing until he can appear in court. The suit, brought by Jimmy Dime of New Castle, seeks a permanent injunction preventing Ross from ring contests under Dick Davis of Youngstown or anyone else until the March 1916 end of Dime’s contract. The contract requires Ross to fight only under Dime’s management and notes Dime trains Italian in boxing. Ross's attorney W S Anderson said Ross was badly injured in a recent New York match with Al Kaufman and cannot attend court.
Theodore Lampert of the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce publicity department stopped in New Castle as part of a May 26 28 trade excursion tour. About 100 manufacturers jobbers and wholesalers are expected aboard a Pullman train with two diners on a special schedule. The group will spend two hours in New Castle and one hour in Sharon with no retailers solicited.
R. R. Montgomery first vice president and M. E. McCaskey general manager of the Mahoning & Shenango Valley Railway & Light company, both of Youngstown, visited New Castle Monday morning and declined to disclose the purpose before returning to Youngstown on the 11 o'clock car.
In an inal court report Perry 15 is held on a charge of embezzlement as details remain sparse. Police and local court records indicate the case involves fund misappropriation with pending hearings.
Italian interpreter L A Perry was held for court on embezzlement after Mrs Nicola Ali and attorney H A Wilkison testified that Perry collected 100 from Mrs Ali to pay for defense of her husband Nicola Ali jailed on Black Hand charges. Perry claimed to replace funds but did not appear with money.
Little James Shields, son of Mr and Mrs William Shields, drank medicine containing arsenic in New Bedford last week. His mother found him and a doctor was called. In about two hours the danger passed and the child is now fully recovered.
Arguments were heard on a non suit motion in the case of Frank McConnell and Elizabeth McConnell versus Cassius W. Ranney. The McConnells claim Ranney charged excess fees. Ranney denies the accusation.
Samuel Henry Hice aged 56 died at his North Mercer Street home in Pittsburg from heart trouble after a night of illness. He leaves a widow Margaret Wilson and six children including Mrs Ward of Niles and Misses Layte Nancy and George, plus others. Hice was a traveling salesman and member of the Cleveland and Pittsburg Traveling Men's associations and the Maccabees.
