A jetliner carrying 49 people crashes in the Persian Gulf with no survivors. Among the victims are 23 Americans. The wreckage is found after the disaster.
Separate fires within two days razed two barns in North Beaver Township. Mollenkopf’s Mol lenkopf farm barn burned at Mt Jackson Moravia Rd destroying equipment and stored grain. Gardner’s Moravia Peters burg Rd. barn destroyed with $20,000 damage.
Paris officials report President Charles de Gaulle left his hospital bed and walked in his room a day after a prostate operation. Doctors say his condition is very satisfactory and he could return to duties within a month, though a decision on a second term remains uncertain.
Local track standout Bob Doster again surpasses the New Castle High broad jump mark, highlighted on page 12 amid Today’s News coverage. His latest leap stands as a standout feat in the season’s field events.
The Fine Arts Festival starts at 2 p.m. in the Cathedral featuring woodcarvings and paintings. It runs until 10 p.m. tomorrow with 100 paintings by adults and 242 student artworks. Tonight at 8 p.m. special music and ballet excerpts. Sweet Adelines perform tomorrow at 2 p.m. and an 8 p.m. headline. An 18 year old Crawford Avenue boy is in poor condition at Jameson Memorial Hospital after being thrown from a motorbike when it hit a car on South Mill Street early today. Witnesses said William McCreary Jr. of 207 Crawford Avenue was hurled about 15 feet in the air and landed roughly 30 feet from the impact point.
Scattered showers and a few thundershowers expected this afternoon with highs 66 to 72 north and 74 to 80 south. Tonight rain showers persist with cooler lows 40 to 55. Sunday turns mostly cloudy with showers waning to scattered by afternoon. Also reports list UPI weather notes including Texas heat and a motorbike crash in New York with injuries to McCreary and Pascarella.
An eight year old city boy, Richard Boyles, was treated at Jam eson Memorial Hospital for multiple abrasions after dashing into a car driven by E. J. Ricker at the Euclid avenue and Albert street intersection. Ricker followed to the boy's home and informed the mother. Earlier incidents left Barry C. Martin dead and Fred Chiaverini injured while Joseph P. Fulena Jr. escaped serious harm. In Saigon, U S Secretary of State Dean Rusk met with South Vietnamese leader Nguyen Khanh amid violence and coup rumors.
Fishermen faced a disappointing opener on area streams with no fish at Rambler's Rest and only a few at Rock's Springs Camp Fred Rentz and Big Run crowded with anglers but yielded little. Jim Cox of Volant landed a single trout on a nymph amid early morning fog of Leesburg and nearby creeks.
Jerrie Mock, 38, becomes first woman to fly solo around the world, landing The Spirit of Columbus in Columbus Ohio after a 29 day, 22 hour journey. A 100000 strong crowd greeted her as President Johnson sent a telegram of congratulations. Gov. Rhodes joined the celebration as the homecoming unfolded.

President Johnson invited Soviet Ambassador Anatoly F. to the White House for about an hour of general discussion on Soviet American relations. Officials said the meeting aimed to give closer understanding of key issues and that more such talks may follow.

The Optimist Club Distinguished Citizen Award dinner starts 6:30 p.m. in the Cathedral. Casillo has penned 1000 plus articles for Fur Fish Game and other outlets and hosted Outdoor Rambles in The News for nearly 20 years.
