Los Angeles April 18 police thwarted an abortive plot by John Henry Grant to blow up a United Air Lines plane with his family and 13 other passengers aboard. H A Mayer a UAL cargo handler stopped the plan at Los Angeles International Airport. Betty Suomela of Hermosa Beach admitted she was in love with Grant.
Washington April 18 The Capitol Hill Atomic committee discusses world control of the hydrogen bomb with Gen. Omar Bradley. A house senate committee plans a closed door meeting on hydrogen bomb and international control proposals. Sen McMahon announced hearings to review UN plan and Baruch plan changes amid Russian veto.
Reports from Hong Kong say Chinese Communist forces captured Lintin Island a key Nationalist base in the Pearl River estuary. Pro Communist sources claim landings at Hainan Island near Linsze Harbor and Shengmowan, about 30 miles west of Ho-show, with Gen Lin Piao’s forces overwhelming Nationalist defenses.

Johnstown Traction Company workers rejected a four cent wage increase and voted to strike at 5 a.m. tomorrow. About 300 operators and employees, members of the AFL Amalgamated Association of Street Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employes, demanded a ten cent raise.

Harrisburg April 18 Gov James Duff announced the appointment of Allegheny county judge Blair F Gunther to the state superior court. The jurist was slated for the post on the Duff Fine primary slate at a Harrisburg meeting March 25.
Senator Elmer Thomas of Oklahoma urged cutting off Marshall Plan aid to Sweden. He cited his Europe trip as not proving a need for U S loans or assistance and claimed Sweden profited from neighbors' destruction. He plans to propose ending aid during the foreign aid bill debate.
Harrisburg reporters say the General State Authority awarded contracts for a 292 bed hospital at Hollidaysburg state hospital. Marvin Electric Company won the electric contract for 6135 dollars while McCloskey Company of Philadelphia received the general contract.
