The Air Ministry reported a new wave of British air raids along the Norwegian coast including Stavanger aimed at hindering Hitler’s use of the area as a base for raids on England. Three British planes failed to return from the operations, according to the air ministry communiqué.

Lawrence Cunningham of Bartram avenue and Andy Schuster of Enon Valley were arrested by City Policeman Clarence Welsh on North MIN street for damaging and robbing a parking meter on North Mall street. They admitted taking 35 cents, police recovered the hammer and meter, and in court Mayne ordered further questioning to determine their responsibility for recent meter robberies.
Mayor Charles B. Mayne said the council did not meet today as all members except the mayor traveled to Lebanon to inspect a new concrete paving find. If they return late, a meeting will be held Friday.
A Norwegian seaman rescued from the Stancliffe torpedoing claims the German liner Bremen was sunk off Norway with 15,000 German troops aboard. Survivors said a U boat commander warned ships would be sunk after May 1 while handing out rum and cigarettes. Berlin denies Bremen loss, saying the luxury liner lies in a German harbor and was not used as a troop transport.

Rome April 18 The government announced that several thousand previously exempted members of four Italian military classes have been called to the colors after re-examination and found fit for service. Officials denied any new classes were summoned and rejected claims Bari was declared a military zone.
International Desk reports Britain warns Mussolini to stay neutral but keeps options open. Diplomatic quarters say chances of Italy siding with Germany have moved from 50 50 to 40 60 as events unfold.
DETROIT April 18 Norman Selby known as Kid McCoy, 68, who sought immortality as a boxing figure, killed himself by an overdose of sleeping tablets. Police found two notes on a night table near his bed in a downtown hotel. one was addressed to the Ford Motor paymaster.
A Westminster mock Republican convention in the college gymnasium endured nine ballots with no winner as Dewey led with 277 votes, Vandenberg 158, Martin 16, and Taft 1. The process continued overnight with shifts among Dewey Vandenberg Taft and Martin factions as state leaders tried to sway delegates. Governor James briefly commanded 49 votes, and Taft’s backers shifted to Dewey on the seventh ballot.
Wampum borough voters head to the polls Tuesday to decide a $20,000 bond issue for a gymnasium auditorium. If approved, the high school gains a new indoor facility. if rejected, indoor sports may be abandoned. The district cites current hall closure and seeks state and federal aid to fund the project and run the schools.

A tornado hit the farming community of Bethel near Glen and Mora on April 1 severing 16 miles west. Homes and the community schoolhouse were demolished while no casualties were reported. residents sheltered in Bethel church as the storm passed.
Berlin reports German troops have occupied Namsos, a town and harbor 100 miles north of Trondheim, a move deemed strategically important. The statement coincides with UK reports of landings along a Norwegian coastal stretch from Narvik to Namisos.
British air forces and naval units continue a blitzkrieg style campaign against Stavanger and other Norwegian coastal points held by Germany. Royal Air Force bombs and sea blockades target German reinforcements while Trondheim emerges as the likely focus for decisive Scandinavian operations. German preparations in Trondheim include dug trenches and conversion of homes for military use.
South American leaders from the Dominican Republic Ecuador and Honduras pledged united opposition to any forceful invasion of the Western Hemisphere. Stockholm April 18 report says the German pocket battleship Luetzow once the Deutschland is aground on the Norwegian coast as German and British forces ready for a major showdown in the Trondheim area. Svenska Dagbladet carried the dispatch from Gunnar Knutsson at the Swedish-Norwegian border.
President Roosevelt in a letter to Speaker Bankhead raised the nation's relief needs for the coming fiscal year from under 1 billion to about 1.5 billion dollars. He said earlier hopes for higher industrial activity had not materialized and proposed keeping relief expenditures for fiscal 1941 near the current year level. The letter asked Congress to follow the earlier estimate of 975 million dollars for the coming year while preserving discretionary spending power for the first eight months.
