Special to The News reports Beverly Hills California April 18 that the decennial census checks if people are alive, records names and addresses, and notifies individuals if anything arises in ten years. It notes California will gain six new congressmen and questions the census’ purpose.
PA Newc observes license plate 85 AD on Cro ton avenue and notes Good Friday. Census work nears completion as supervisor Brown urges reporting absences. B and O employ 1,290 in New Castle Junction, paying nearly two million yearly. Spring rains spur vegetation growth. schools prep for summer vacation. First United Presbyterian church to dedicate new building May 18, replacing fire-destroyed downtown structure. Allegheny College to have Chas M Schwab speak at commencement June 10. Lawn mower season arrives. lawns grow fast, dandelions plentiful. A sycamore tree on the public square inspires the Garden club to seek a historic name.
Weather statistics for the 24 hour period ending at 9 this morning show a maximum temperature of 66 and a minimum of 50. Precipitation is 0.9 inches and the river stage sits at 9.9 feet.
Henry Colin Close alias Campbell was executed in New Jersey for the torch murder of his second wife Mrs Mildred Mowry. His first wife claimed his body for cremation. The case linked to bigamy and attempted concealment with arson, following a Philadelphia meeting after a Greenville, Pennsylvania marriage.
The Parker confirmation fight and probes into the shipping board and post office leasing create grave political problems for the administration in the Senate. A Republican senator predicts about twelve administration votes could oppose Parker if the nomination reaches a vote, urging withdrawal to avoid union labor and black support losses.
Robert Hoose of New Castle Senior High School won the Northwestern elimination in Meadville Pa earning unanimous judges’ choice and advancing to the state finals in Philadelphia on May 10. The victory honors Miss Clara Hartsuff public speaking instructor as well.
Armed bandits seized a mail truck at Chicago Municipal Airport and abducted driver Adolph Stehno. They transferred five mail pouches to a second car and fled toward a prairie, leaving the driver unharmed after a one mile escape. Authorities estimate loot to be substantial.
Two armed men robbed the Jacob Halter and Son offices in Cleveland seizing a payroll of 2700 dollars. Paymaster Clarence Sabath faced the gun as bandits jumped from a car, grabbed the parcel, and fled with an accomplice driving a waiting vehicle.
Mrs. Marjorie Ryan, 45, was shot twice by William Costello, 60, after she refused his marriage proposals. Costello then killed himself by leaping from a twelfth floor window, leaving a note stating this was for being a double crosser.
William Willock Jr., son of steel magnate, prepares to contest a breach of promise suit filed by Catherine McCormick, a former maid at the Willock estate. Attorney Yorke Allen says the ex-maid began proceedings and vows to fight to the last ditch. she seeks no settlement.
The preliminary injunction case against the city delaying repayment with Woods & Golder has been postponed from Monday April 21 to Thursday April 24 at 9 p m. Attorneys and Judge Hildebrand agreed to the rescheduling per Solicitor Robert White.
Washington April 18 The pensions committee threatens to force a vote on a veteran pension system if the Johnson or Rankin bills fail to pass. Rep Knutson says the committee will report Swick’s bill affecting about a million people and costing about 125 million dollars a year for five years. The Johnson bill would presume service connection for disabilities above 10 percent shown before January 1, 1925. the ranking bill sets the date to January 1, 1930.
Attorney Roy Mercer represented Meyer Avenue property owners at a council session urging paving. An ordinance, plans, and specifications are approved. Mercer cited a petition showing majority frontage and owner support. About a dozen owners attended in favor. seven signed a remonstrance, read and filed, with no individual objections voiced.
Salvatore Salvaggio of Jerome received life in prison at Western Penitentiary after being convicted last year of murder in a Jerome coal mine. He was found guilty of killing Martin Lease with a miner's pick during the previous year.
City churches join in joyous Easter services to cap the Lenten season. Third United Presbyterian plans a 7 30 pm cantata The King Eternal with Roy McCown soloist and a chorus performance. Continuation noted on page twenty six.
A car crashed through lowered crossing gates in Waukegan and was struck by a North Shore Line electric train. Harold Drieske and Louis Koppel, both of Chicago, were killed. Injured were Mrs. Koppel Mrs. Grace Lund and Bernard Rein schrible.
Washington reports that four Adams air mail pickup devices will be installed on the Pittsburgh Cleveland route with two likely in Swick’s district. Possible additional five devices may be approved, with Ambridge as a candidate, aiming at direct daily air mail service for New Castle and Beaver Falls.
Uniontown Pa April 18 Constable George Zemo testified in the Tony Bell and Glenn Allum case over Constable John Donohoe s July death He identified Glenn Allum as the man seen with Donohoe in a Republic road car about an hour before the shooting Zemo said the auto paused in Republic then moved toward Uniontown In other testimony Mrs E Summerville Masontown negress said Bell and August Valli took a five gallon can of moonshine and the pair identified men as County Detective A A Downing and Constable Walter Brown when questioned but she said the lights revealed Bell and Valli.
Dense fog off the Delaware capes and New Jersey coast caused a collision between freighter F. J. Luckenbach and steamer Sartartia near Five Fathom shoals east of Cape May. Both ships limped to port. a Coast Guard cutter rescued a badly injured seaman with a fractured skull and crushed ribs. Hospital staff do not know the sailor’s name.
Mrs. Belle Chenoweth, 42, was taken into custody in Chicago as police investigated the shooting death of her husband Claude Chenoweth in their home. The widow briefly spoke at her attorney Frank P. Zaleski’s office admitting the killing, saying she shot him while he slept and urged investigators to verify the claim.
Miss Barbara Hanna a 22 year old Carnegie resident was rushed to Presbyterian hospital after an early morning attempted death by own action. An unidentified couple said they saw her drink from a small bottle and fall in the street then left without names. Police report she left home after quarrel with her parents and could only repeat she wanted to die.
William Potts aged 78 of East Brook dies. Peter Lee Hogue 37 of 216 East Grant Street is listed. Anna Jean Mellwain age 5 of Ellwood City is also noted.
President Hoover plans to send the three power naval treaty to the Senate for ratification as soon as received to secure action before the summer adjournment. Senate leaders expect only limited opposition if the text matches London cabled summaries. Senator Hale will demand hearings to allow the board to voice views on the treaty’s impact on the U S Navy, potentially delaying ratification.
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh awaits favorable weather in Van Nuys California for a one stop high altitude flight to New York. His monoplane is fueled and ready with Mrs. Lindbergh aboard as co pilot. He plans to stop at Wichita Kansas for fuel as weather delays continue.
