Teen driver pleads to fatal crash with sister killed

Robert F Brunswick, 19, pleaded no contest to two counts of homicide by vehicle after a crash on Atlantic Avenue in Taylor Township killed his sister Summer, 15, and another passenger, William George, 17. He faces up to 50 years and a $105,375 fine with a sentencing hearing set for May 29.

County narrows plan for Neshannock Creek Trail project

Lawrence County will limit the Neshannock Creek Trail to about one mile of the old rail corridor within New Castle. Plans between the County Planning Office and PennDOT push the first phase, the largest segment owned by the city, with future expansion toward Volant. Commissioner Burick said full extension depends on landowner cooperation and phased approvals. Ed Fosnaught questioned why the public wasn’t informed of the one mile limit. PennDOT liaison Ed Fosnaught noted the original scope and plans in a April 1 letter to the county planning director.

Man sleeps as train passes over him in Ellwood City

Franklin Township reports a man slept on railroad tracks near Street in Ellwood City as an 81 car freight train passed over him after 1 a.m. He was not injured. Police arrested Carl Phillip Ritter 30 of Ferndale Trailer Court for alleged public drunkenness after awakening him.

Landlord seeks halt to New Castle building code ordinance

Brian Simpson of 124 Edinburg Road seeks an injunction to stop enforcement of the city’s new building code ordinance claiming it violates constitutional rights by allowing warrantless inspections of rental properties and imposing fees without due process. The suit contends the ordinance imposes double taxation via permit and inspection fees and fines landlords $300 for noncompliance. The case was set for briefs after a May 3 effective date.
