President Nixon said American forces will stay in Southeast Asia until all prisoners are released and Vietnam can defend itself, but he rejected a fixed withdrawal deadline and planned further troop cuts this fall. He also defended Hoover against harsh criticism and stood by releasing Lt. William L. Calley Jr. for the murder of 22 Vietnamese.

A state mine inspector William C. Groves died at Buckeye Coal Co. mine in NEMACOLIN Pennsylvania while directing firefighting efforts. He drowned after slipping in foam and falling into water 400 feet underground as two miners remained trapped by flames March 26. Groves was 57 and from Carmichaels.
About 500 delegates at USW District 20 convention in Pittsburgh voted unanimously to back a modified right to strike over local grievances after attempts to resolve disputes with management. They also pushed for a cost of living clause in upcoming contract talks with the steel industry.
The Grove City College Board of Trustees named Rev Dr Charles S MacKenzie as its new president. He is 46 and currently a Presbyterian minister in San Mateo California. He will assume the post from Dr Stanley Harker on September 1.
South Vietnamese forces press through the A Shau Valley toward the Laotian border. General Abrams declines ruling out incursion into Laos or North Vietnam. Thieu says the drive shows the enemy fears a broader push, with U.S. B52 strikes reported nearby.
Aides to President Nixon will meet informally with Building and Construction Trades Department delegates in Washington during a four day conference. The talks center on wage boards and the union's legislative program with safety topics and visits from federal officials on Thursday.
Personnel at Moraine State Park monitor a possible pollution pool near the marina on Lake Arthur after a reddish discoloration appeared in water linked to the main lake. Andrew M. Dodds and D. O. Davies observed seepage and the pool while a park spokesman said there is no alarm but will investigate.
