Beverly Hills April 17 Maria Iturbi Hero daughter of pianist Jose Iturbi committed suicide with a pistol shot to an upstairs room while her father played downstairs. She died two and a half hours later at Beverly Hills Receiving Hospital. Hero had faced years of marital and legal troubles including custody disputes with Stephen Hero. She was 28 and left no note.
A blaze at 122 Dudley St in South Philadelphia gutted a home. Guardians escaped by jumping from a second story window. Victims were Francis Pierce and Patsy Pierce. Betty Lee Ross, a caregiver, survived with minor injuries. Mother Ethel Pierce worked at the time. father was in Europe with the army.

Pvt Charles LeRoy Gibson aged 18 son of Councilman and Mrs James Gibson of 216 Fast Sheridan Ave died in a U S Army hospital in Berlin on April 11 after a weeklong diphtheria and heart illness. Born May 8 1927 in New Castle he attended local schools and joined the Virginia Military Academy in 1945 before entering the Army. He served overseas from January 1946 and was a member of the First U P church Troop 3 Boy Scouts the Order of the Builders and Perry S Gaston Post American Legion. Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers and three sisters and grandfather J L Maxwell.
