IRS workers in Wichita report a string of humorous tax tales as deadline midnight nears. Be testy taxpayers vent and seek help while officers recall a humorous exchange about foreign bank accounts and a debtor's plea. The strain brings out American humor amid the tax crunch.
David J. Yough, 22, of 201 Caldwell Ave, was killed when his northbound car on Pa. 65 in Shenango Township crossed the center line and hit a pickup driven by Ronald Angelucci, 18. Angelucci was seriously injured and pinned in his vehicle. The accident occurred at 11:20 p.m. and fire crews removed Yough from the wreckage.
Rescue teams evacuated about 2,000 tourists and schoolchildren from the quake damaged Adriatic coast of Yugoslavia and Albania. Officials put the death toll around 150 to 200 with 600 to 930 injured as aftershocks rocked towns from Dubrovnik to the Albanian border. Dozens of thousands camped in streets or parks while aid poured in to Bar and nearby towns.
Yale physicians Drs. Joseph L. Belsky and Donald S. Dock report no evidence of genetic harm in the children or grandchildren of atomic bomb survivors. They say radiation from the bombs dissipated quickly but warn long term low level exposure risks remain, relevant to Three Mile Island fallout concerns.
Police report vandalism tied to ongoing steel hauling strike in New Castle where Teamsters Local 261 says no word on tentative agreement. A truck from Chadderton Trucking was vandalized with five tires punctured in the Fast n Friendly lot.
Door to door view with Tom Dillon, Chadderton traffic manager, saying the vandalism incident is directly connected to the steel haulers strike. He reports no other vandalism of trucks. Steel haulers remain on strike with New Castle operations shut down today and picketing at local firms. Interstate Motor Freight System and McLean Trucking Co. steel divisions also report shutdowns.
Three security guards were found shot to death and at least $1 million was taken from a bullet-riddled Purolator Security, Inc. garage in Waterbury Connecticut. One body was found inside a white armored car on the morning shift after Easter weekend. the other two guards were also shot inside the building. None were immediately identified.
The American Friends Service Committee says coordinated state and local police surveillance and recordkeeping on individuals and groups for political purposes remains widespread across the nation. The 166-page report, based on a 32-year investigation, says agencies at all levels cooperate with private groups, share information, and use regional and national computer networks, posing threats to freedom of expression due process and privacy.

A 12 year old boy bound at the feet by an intruder escaped a burning barn in Lackawannock Township five miles west of Mercer. The assailant bound the boy and set the straw filled structure ablaze before fleeing. Damage was estimated at 3000 dollars.
