The story notes trout season opening as anglers head to Big Neshannock Creek before dawn. The Pennsylvania Fish Commission stocked 6,000 trout in the stream, a shipment redirected from Slippery Rock Creek due to pollution.
Female residents in Lawrence County exceed male voters by 1306 in the May 17 primary with 24625 women and 25931 men registered. Republicans outnumber Democrats 26989 to 23232 and total registrations compare with 51229 last year.
Dist Atty Kenneth E. Fox Jr. plans to conclude an inquiry into $10,488 missing from the former county sheriff's office early next week. Former sheriff Frank L. Coen and deputies reportedly underwent state police lie detector tests. Donald A. Dinsmore, now chief deputy under Sheriff George Sigler, is named by Controller Robert E. Foht in connection with the missing funds and Bond status is under review. Coen was surcharged by Focht for the missing funds as the ex sheriff was deemed responsible for all operations in the former office.
About 32,000 coal miners defied return-to-work orders for a sixth day while UMW and BCOA paused in Washington to discuss the latest contract offer. In Pennsylvania and surrounding states, roughly 55,000 soft coal workers struck, some warning the Peabody-like deal would be insufficient, as talks with Southern Coal Operators also proceeded.
US Marines fought a hand to hand battle 375 miles north of Saigon amid a massive mortar barrage. They killed at least 12 attackers, captured weapons including grenade launchers and submachine guns, and found 12 enemy bodies. Casualties were moderate with wounded returning to duty. A separate raid on Tan Son Nhut airbase near Saigon killed seven Americans and one Vietnamese.
Chu Van Binh editor of Song newspaper was wounded four times by two youths on a motorbike as anti-government demonstrations in Da Nang burned a decree promising free elections. In Saigon, authorities blamed the Viet Cong for the attempted assassination, while Buddhist demonstrators pressed Ky’s caretaker regime.
Two customers of a local financial institution thwarted a fraud by convincing 93 year old Mrs. C. E. McDougall to redeposit $1 500 she had just withdrawn. They trailed her to a cab and persuaded her to keep the cash after she had been told by a man posing as a detective to trap an embezzler. Police say the caller claimed a teller was withdrawing funds.
UPI reports officials in Washington show little optimism about stable governance in South Vietnam. Questions linger over three to five month elections under the Ky regime and potential Buddhist influence, with fears of new coups and fragile coalition unity amid ongoing U.S. military plans.
Lawrence County Society for Crippled Children and Adults proposes a shared center on Ellwood Rd to house multiple health and welfare agencies. Jordanian Ambassador Midhat Jumaa was shot twice while pursuing a thief who entered his Beirut residence at about 4 a.m. He underwent emergency chest surgery at American Hospital and was reported in satisfactory condition as bullets were removed and he rested.
