South Viet Nam drives to break central highlands siege
South Vietnamese forces aided by U.S. planes and artillery opened a new push to disrupt the North Vietnamese central highlands offensive. Fire Base 6 near Dak To and Ben Het saw reduced fighting as commanders reported slowing aggression, while bomb squads targeted Tan Canh and ARVN paratroops fought two miles southeast of Fire Base 6. U.S. casualties last week totaled 42 killed and 318 wounded, raising the war toll to 44,918 Americans since 1961, with overall Indochina losses surpassing 900,000.

Former city man stabbed to death during burglary at Cleveland club
Gilbert J. Bennett 63, formerly manager of the B&O Rest House and a cook at the Columbus 1700 Club, was stabbed 66 times when he surprised burglars. A man shot near his car in downtown Cleveland is held in connection with the murder, with another suspect at large. Bennett had moved from New Castle to Cleveland in March.

Arrests on drugs climb in county investigation
Drug related arrests rose to eight after city police detained three men and a juvenile on charges under the Drug Device and Cosmetics Act and conspiracy. Greg Bradley, 19, was jailed on a $1,000 cash bond. William McCune, 23, and Ray Alexander, 20, posted $2,000 bonds. A 1¢-year-old Edinburg juvenile was released to relatives. Officers stopped a car on Produce Street near 8:20 p.m. and found a pill believed to be LSD, with more pills found later in grass. Two other men, Edward Beckett, 20, and John Natale, 22, held on bond pending hearings. Two juvenile suspects have petitions pending.

Nader decries bumper standard as government capitulation
Ralph Nader said the government yielded to automakers by setting bumper impact limits at five miles per hour for front bumpers and two to two and a half miles per hour for rear bumpers. He warned consumers will pay more and face outrageous repair costs that a stronger standard could have avoided. The standard, announced Wednesday, affects 1973 model cars due in fall 1972.
