U S Representative Warren R. Austin announced at Flushing Meadows that Congress will ratify the North Atlantic Pact and then present it to the United Nations. House Members On Ten Day Vacation With Easter Break

House members began a 19 day Easter recess as the Senate recessed. The House breather ends April 25 when lawmakers resume to tackle repeal of the Taft Hartley Act amid an anticipated clash. The Senate will work on the housing bill Monday but open the season with a shortened session.

Blooming Magnolia Scenes Reported Citywide

Magnolia trees around the city and county are in full bloom creating a colorful spring display. An Old Timer notes an additional historic circus site on Center street behind the Engineering Works. Cathedral Foundation plants hillside shrubs along Highland avenue but vandals have pulled them out. Trout fishermen flocked to streams for opening day despite less than ideal weather, with stocking noted and expectations of good catches.

Daily Weather Report Rain turns to snow flurries and colder

A weather bulletin notes rain turning to snow flurries this evening with wind and a cooler night. Saturday remains windy and cold with additional light snow flurries. 24 hour figures show a high of 75 and a low of 52 with 0.02 inch precipitation and a 5.7 foot river stage. A year ago the day recorded 51 high, 39 low and 0.07 inch precipitation.

Car Flips on Route 422 West of New Castle

A left front tire blew out on a convertible driving east on Route 422 near Pulaski Edenburg road. The car struck guard rails, overturned onto its side, and four occupants crawled out uninjured. Driver Wilbur A. Brown of Miami with Mary Lou Mack Katherine Bevan and James Vallely were aboard. Traffic halted briefly until state police arrived.

Damage estimates rise from Pacific quake toll

Pacific northwest damage nears 19 million dollars with Washington city losses put at 15 to 19 million as surveys continue. A Tacoma school roof collapsed, killing an 11 year old, and 64 people were seriously injured. Washington public instruction chief Wanamaker said 30 schools with 10 000 students were damaged and half may be repaired. A lighter aftershock followed.

Fullerton California April 15 two pilots Bill Barris and Dick Riedel both of Fullerton shattered the world endurance flight record of 726 hours flying the Sunkist Lady toward a goal of at least six weeks aloft They have logged more than sixty thousand miles since the March 15 takeoff and expect to return in a few weeks their wives among the cheering crowd at Fullerton airport nearby.

Hollywood April 15 actress Lila Leeds fresh from jail faces questioning on possible hit and run charges after a borrowed 1949 Cadillac rammed another car on Sunset Strip. Elizabeth Mueller 29 suffered injuries as Leeds and companion Marie Allison were treated for injuries at Hollywood Leland Hospital.

Pennsy Orders 960 Container Cars for Steel Trade

The Pennsylvania Railroad announced 960 bulk containers ordered to speed material transport for rising steel production. Each eight-ton capacity container will carry lime dolomite ferro manganese and other steel constituents. The railroad also ordered 200 all steel cabin cars for fast through freight service, to be built at Altoona Works increasing container count to 3766. The cabin cars will also be built at Altoona.

New Bus Lines Set to Open Next Week for Shenango Valley

President Samuel L. Friedman of Shenango Valley Transportation said the routes and extensions for the new bus lines are announced, with the Sampson street turning point to be settled on Saturday or Monday. The three new runs are expected to begin operation next week.

Bank Robbery Suspect Held in Morgantown Capture

Pittsburgh report says Roy Mann, 27, taken into custody in Morgantown by FBI and West Virginia officers in the $5,400 Folllansbee, West Virginia bank robbery. Two other suspects, James Bennett and Carl Close, flee toward Florida in blue and gray Buicks. Weirton and Morgantown view the suspect as officials probe possible ties to other kidnap cases. A 17-year-old soldier in Greensburg faces auto theft charges, with no confirmed link to the gang.
