Two arrested in murder-for-hire plot targeting judge worker

FBI arrested Margaret Beaver, 36, of 702 Bear Oak St, and her estranged husband James F. Beaver, 53, in a murder-for-hire conspiracy involving President Judge Glenn McCracken Jr and Lawrence County Children’s Services worker Kathy Thompson. Indictment cites meetings in Wheeling and New Castle, with Beavers detained without bond.

Bush Thatcher warn USSR over Lithuania secession

President Bush and Prime Minister Thatcher warned Mikhail Gorbachev that a Soviet partial economic blockade of Lithuania could damage East West relations. They cited Tass reporting that Moscow would cut supplies if Lithuania pressed its secession. Bush noted no new intelligence after golf at the Mid Ocean Club and planned to return to Washington.

Geneva student to publish underground newspaper

Genev a student plans a one edition underground tabloid named The Last Word after Geneva College newspaper was shut March 27 for an editorial critical of the Roman Catholic Church. Editor Eric Dugan and assistant Mikel Lynn Davis say the eight page issue will cost about 150 to 200 dollars to publish with roughly 125 dollars raised. Copies will be produced by a Beaver Falls business and Ellwood City Ledger with 1 300 copies distributed via college mailboxes.

Census response edges up as Midwest leads in 1990 count

The Census Bureau reported a 2 point rise in national census returns to 59 percent with Wisconsin at 73.4 percent and Iowa at 72.2 percent leading the states. Officials cited delays from missing addresses and other problems, while urging residents to mail back forms this weekend.

Express launches for county students April edition
