American destroyers attacked three Japanese bases on New Guinea including Hansa Bay and Alexishafen with support from heavy bombers. Rabaul and Uliagan harbor also faced air strikes as allied forces intensified operations in the New Guinea theater.
Ground forces on Bougainville Island in the Torokina area expanded their line two miles to the east. A monthly enemy losses tally through April 8 lists 5,370 Japanese officers and men in the island fighting.

State police captured Dale L. Baker, 16, of Sou Pine Street, and Jack DeGenners, 15, of Acorn Street, after a pursuit ending in an abandoned limestone mine on Cascade Street where they hid stolen cars. Most vehicles were stolen in the city. one was taken from Slippery Rock after a hit and run on the New Castle Slippery Rock highway. Police conducted a detailed search of the mine, locating one car several hundred feet underground as the youths tried to escape. They were returned to juvenile court officer Jack M. Dunlap and remain in custody.
Gen Douglas MacArthur received his biggest GOP endorsement as a presidential hopeful as Illinois returns show over half a million votes for him. He dominates with about 70 percent of the Republican tally, averaging 58 votes per precinct across 8728 precincts, projected at 506124 votes. He faced only Riley A Bender, a Chicago real estate dealer, who trails about 15 to 1. Dwight H Green's slate also won easily.
Maj. Gregory Boyington of Okanogan Washington, a Marine Corps fighter ace credited with 26 downed Japanese planes, is awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously by President Roosevelt. Navy announces the honor for extraordinary heroism. Boyington was reported missing in action over Rabaul.
In Nebraska's Republican presidential primary write-ins, Thomas E. Dewey placed second to Harold F. Stassen, with Willkie third and Roosevelt atop the Democratic ballot. Unofficial results from 1,432 precincts showed Stassen 34,268 votes, Dewey 13,016, Willkie 3,908, and Roosevelt 23,348. Griswold led GOP nomination efforts with a six to one edge over Brooks.
