A 7.0 magnitude quake in southern Iran leveled adobe huts across a 250 mile area and killed between 2,000 and 4,000 people, with up to 40,000 residents in 20 to 30 villages possibly destroyed. Rescue helicopters retrieved bodies as the Shah dispatched planes and a relief team.

James Francis Byrnes died at his home at 92 with his wife and nurse present. Flags flew at half staff as Nixon led the mourning. Funeral planned at Trinity Episcopal Church with burial in the church cemetery. Byrnes served as assistant president for the home front and held multiple top government posts including Supreme Court nominee and secretary of state.
District Lodge 106 IAM rejected Mesta Machine Co plan to alter local seniority to reopen the plant assembly line. The vote 174 to 26 opposes a move viewed as giving more operational flexibility. Mesta employed 700 previously, now 175 in weld shop. no bargaining table plans announced. Frank Mesota called the result disappointing.
Eighty nations including Great Britain Russia and the United States sign a treaty pledging never to develop produce stockpile or retain biological warfare weapons. Secretary Rogers and Ambassador Leonard sign for the US with President Nixon present. France’s stance and China’s position remain unclear as the U N General Assembly had endorsed the pact by 110 to zero with one abstention.
