Pittsburgh star Mario Lemieux played his final regular-season home game before a standing-room crowd in a 3-1 Penguins win over Boston. He did not score but fired 11 shots in his last home appearance.
Lawrence County plans to hire a firm to take aerial photographs to map a detailed street and address guide for 911 emergency dispatch. Three companies bid for the project, with totals from under 500000 to near 800000, to cover mapping, naming, numbering, property IDs, and aerial photography.
Delights mushroom Portabello dishes led a sell out Taste of the Town at Lawrence County Area Vocational Technical High School. The New Castle News sponsored the event at which proceeds benefited the American Cancer Society. Nine food providers offered varied menus including Portabello mushrooms and other items.
City officials plan to amend a 1985 apartment inspection ordinance while keeping it in force. The plan includes a $50 license fee and regular inspections to ensure safe building standards, though landlords call the fee discriminatory. Officials say current rules require tenant consent or landlord invitation for entry unless a warrant is sought for life threatening issues.
The Olde Library Inn will cease operations at the close of business on December 12 1997. General manager Jim Bryss expressed gratitude to customers after 13 years of operation in the Olde Library Complex at 106 E North St. The Crisci family, owners since 1994, announced downtown restaurant closing May 31. Thomas George and partners Dr Rifaat Bassaly and attorney Thomas Piccione ran the complex and restaurant for 9 2 years.
Six Dollar General employees at a Shenango Township store were terminated Monday with no reason given. Spokesperson Judy Pistachio said district manager John Stewart informed them the firings were due to inventory issues, with two employees learning of their dismissals by telephone. Stewart deferred further comment.
