A hand grenade exploded near Tan Son Nhut Air Base outside Saigon wounding five Americans and three Vietnamese. An American was also shot and wounded during anti American demonstrations sweeping Saigon.
Rep. Frank M. Clark D Pa reports anonymous threatening calls during his Saigon stay March 24 to April 1. He linked them to anti American student demonstrations and noted threats to a longshoreman and himself as rioting intensified near Saigon.
President Johnson plans a noon ceremony in a federally financed elderly apartment project to sign a two month extension for Medicare enrollment changing eligibility to May 31. The measure lets 1.3 million Americans over 65 choose to join the plan with a $3 monthly premium for partial federal coverage of doctors bills and services.
Finance Director Richard H. Biddle reported a sample of 20 properties in each of the city's eight wards indicates industry may receive a tax break under current city assessments. Using county figures could yield about $4,000 extra per large firm, and the city might lose small revenue from some private homes. City council will study the county assessment proposal before action.
The Army will open new training centers at Ft. Bragg North Carolina Ft. Campbell Kentucky and Ft. Lewis Washington and bring 15000 soldiers home from Europe to speed Viet Nam buildup. Paratroop training will be enhanced at Bragg and Campbell as part of the plan. The Air Force will shorten basic training to four weeks and shift to a six day week. Authorities say both services will raise manpower beyond June 30 1966 goals.
Washington reports the House Commerce Committee concluded six days of hearings on CATV with testimony on economics and reruns of Bonanza. Lawmakers acknowledged CATV’s reach and debated how to regulate it for the public's best interests, likely resuming in May to balance CATV and broadcasters.

Samuel Dale McCracken a six year old of Hickory Pa died when a one ton boulder dislodged while he and Daniel Crowley 10 threw stones into a creek. He was pinned under the rock and died at a nearby fire hall of a crushed chest. He was born Nov 13 1959 in New Castle and survived by his parents a brother and sister maternal grandparents and a great grandmother.
A Viking Princess cruise ship carrying about 485 aboard caught fire near Cuba while returning to Miami. All passengers were reported safe after abandonment. rescue ships and planes, including Cape Norte and destroyers, circled the area with lifeboats seen in the water.
U S troops killed 44 Viet Cong in two ground actions as Air Force and Navy jets hit North Viet Nam targets. In South Viet Nam the 1st Cavalry and 101st Airborne said they destroyed enemy forces in Operation Lincoln and Operation Fillmore. One American plane was lost due to mechanical trouble and the pilot was rescued after bailing out.
Partly cloudy conditions persist with little temperature change. Highs reach 38 to 45 degrees, tonight’s low 28 to 38, and Saturday remains cool with snow flurries mainly north. 24 hour stats show a max 44 and min 29, with last year figures in parentheses.
