Pedestrian collision leads to suspect arraignment
A 21 year old city man, Joe Mundziak of 1612 Linden St, is charged with failing to stop after a Saturday afternoon crash that injured two pedestrians. Mundziak, released on a $1,000 property bond, later surrendered after police traced his license. Pedestrians Serus Saba, 18, and Tom Carpenter, 2, treated for injuries at St Francis Hospital. In a separate incident, Katherine Dean, 22, was treated for a scalp bruise after a rear end collision involving William Dean and Stephen G Christy. Stolen items included liquor valued at 257 and a stereo unit valued at 85.

Arson attempt foiled at Union barn fire
Three bales of hay burned in a Union Township barn on Moort Ave. but the structure suffered no damage. Fire chief John C. Stoner said the cause is undetermined. Alarm at 8:40 p.m. Saturday. Barn owned by Walter Biedka of 1443 W. Division St. Nearby, a vacant Hillsville house on U.S. 224 saw several burning tugs discarded at 10:40 p.m. Saturday. Anthony Micco dragged them from the house with Mahoning Township fire department not required to act. Fireman Jesse Exposito called it an apparent arson attempt.

Township Denies Petition to Join Elwood City Borough
Wayne Township supervisors rejected John A. Loccisano’s bid to annex his 92 E Fountain Ave property into Elwood City Borough saying the township is already divided enough. Loccisano declined further comment on dismissal or possible action. In Pulaski Township Edward Salama, 29, sustained head scrapes and chest bruises when his car veered into a ditch after he fell asleep at 4:15 am. He, of 308 N Ashland Ave, was treated and released from St Francis Hospital. Police said he was driving east on Route 422 when the crash occurred. Vehicle damage is listed at 1200 dollars. a reckless driving charge is pending.

Shafer to host grass roots town meetings in PA

Fire chief Manning faces April 15 hearing after bond
Fire Chief Charles Manning was released on $10,000 bond after an early Sunday clash with Pittsburgh Police Chief Louis Yakopec. Yakopec alleged Manning punched him and added charges of disorderly conduct assault and battery resisting arrest and surety of the peace. A hearing is set for April 15.

Tragic Weekend Traffic Toll Includes Centre County Girl
UPI reports eleven deaths in weekend crashes across Pennsylvania. A Philipsburg family tragedy features 11 year old Jacqueline Banks who died when a car drove off an embankment into a pond near Franklin. Her mother, driver, was hospitalized with her sister. the father in a second car tried to avert the crash by moving left.

Workmen injured in falls at local cable company
Two Lawrence Cablevision Inc. workers were hurt in separate ladder falls. Robert Isaac, 29, of 928 Warren Ave, suffered a broken right arm and facial scrapes while stringing a line near Westgate Plaza and was discharged from St. Francis Hospital. Wayne Fergurson, 24, of Castle Arms Hotel, received head bruises and scrapes to the knee and elbow after falling on a ladder in the 800 block of Vogan Street and was released from the hospital.

Chrysler Corp plans to shut two more plants today as a nationwide parts shortage from a wildcat strike at a key stamping plant threatens to lay off up to 55,000 workers by week’s end. White to Speak at Lawrence County Conservation Meeting
Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District directors will hold their annual meeting at 8 p.m. in the Pennsylvania Power Co. Building. The speaker is Joseph B. C. White, educational director for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy since 1963.
