Lawrence County plans complete completion of its new $500,000 jail in the first week of May with finishing work, flooring, painting, and equipment inspection remaining. The $704,000 project includes a warehouse and parking area, and demolition of the 114-year-old jail will begin after prisoner transfer.
Groundbreaking for the new city sewage treatment plant was postponed from 2 p.m. Friday to sometime late next week as Sanitation Authority hands responsibility to the city. Officials cite attendance issues and short notice while preliminary site work continues. a resident project engineer will be appointed next Wednesday. The plant is slated for completion in two years.
Washington reports COMSAT launched the 85 pound Early Bird satellite from Cape Kennedy at 6 47 p m EST Tuesday aboard a Delta rocket. Initial telemetry showed the drum shaped craft was slightly below its planned orbit but officials expressed delight with early data.

New York printers and publishers agreed on a two year contract providing a $12 weekly wage increase and an automation fund. The deal, announced by Mayor Wagner after 2 a.m. EST, must be ratified by ITU Local 6 members. Wages would rise $6.50 the first year and $5.50 the second year.
