Members of the House begin an 11 day Easter holiday as the chamber adjourns for recess with the omnibus 29 billion dollar appropriations bill unfinished. The House, resuming April 18, will continue debate on the giant measure after four days of general discussion.
Three Canadian warships Magnificent Micmac and Swansea arrived in New York for a public inspection tour. A 21 gun salute and water jets greeted the ships as Governors Island hosted the naval visitors. This marked Canada’s first formal call at an American port.
The weatherman expects near 60 degrees tomorrow with a chance of showers tomorrow afternoon or night. A colder spell returns Sunday with tonight cloudy and not very cold. Easter Sunday looks dry so far according to the forecast.

In Pittsburgh on April 7 two burglary suspects were wounded by police during a three block chase. Nester Miskow, 38, died from three wounds after hospital transfer. Robert McCann, 36, was captured and jailed. Neighbor Mrs. Barr alerted police about the intruder in the apartment next to hers.
J Arthur Turek supervising principal of Union township schools was elected president of the Lawrence County Principals Association at a New Wilmington meeting. Victor Thomas moves to past president while Mrs Wilber Miller and Glen Johnson are named vice president and secretary treasurer. Dinner preceded the session with Judge W Walter Braham as principal speaker and Thomas chairing the nominating committee.
Obituaries list John L Bryan 77 of Prospect William J Graham 40 of 224 Mahoning Ave and Nellie Pauline Grooms 71 of 17 North Greenwood Ave with ages and addresses recorded for local death notices.
Sen McCarthy says he will prove charges against Owen J Lattimore despite a preliminary clearance by loyalty investigators. Tydings says FBI files show no Communist links while McCarthy piles up secret witnesses for next Thursday’s hearing. Lattimore denounces McCarthy’s accusations as base lies during a committee session in Washington.
President Truman, in Key West during a south Florida vacation, skipped a second swim as temperatures dipped to the low fifties and winds grew strong. He used the cooler spell to clear work but will not act on the Kerr natural gas bill until back in Washington. The White House says he asked Congress for an increase.
The thermometer in downtown Miami fell to 44 degrees, the coldest April reading in city history, with 33 to 39 degrees reported in nearby towns and readings near 50 at Key West. A Florida game in Tampa was canceled due to the cold.
Senator Vandenberg of Michigan has entered Georgetown hospital for continued diagnostic tests. He had a lung removed last year and has been living in his Washington apartment since returning to the capital. The office says the diagnostic procedure began a month ago and he is expected to leave hospital later this week.
Dr. Wilbur E. Flannery was elected president of the Greater New Castle Association at the annual meeting held Thursday night in the Castleton hotel headquarters. He succeeds previous leadership as the organization charts its direction.
Richard E Rentz has served the past year. Re‑elected officers include first vice president J Lepore Matthews and second vice president John R Preston. Secretary Miss Mary VanDivert and treasurer A W Tindall were re‑elected. Directors for division 17 reappointed J O Huston and James K Love. Dr Flannery becomes the new president.
In Tokyo on April 7 seven former Japanese navy men were hanged at Sugamo prison for the bayonet murder of three U S naval airmen during the Okinawa battle. A total of forty one were tried and sentenced to hang, with higher authorities commuting 31 to life imprisonment and disapproving three sentences.
Five law enforcement agencies questioned 25 suspects in the killings of Democratic Chief Charles Binaggio and his associate Charles Gargotta. Investigators consider possible ties to a national gambling syndicate and political crime, while Republicans pressed Congress to probe gambling links in Kansas City.
Senator Mundt criticizes the naming of John Foster Dulles as an adviser to Secretary of State Acheson calling it a gesture and says bipartisan policy requires consultation with Republicans. Acheson says Dulles will not join the London conference team.

Rep Short says Binaggio backed a candidate opposed by Truman and was killed for being in the way. Rep Macy revises a resolution for a nationwide inquiry into crime and gambling to include the affair.
Two night watchmen, John S. Carpenter, 45, and Oliver R. Hess, 56, were stabbed to death in a major Washington department store. Carpenter’s bound body was found in a first floor washroom, Hess in front of a sixth floor elevator. An Americ an District Telegraph attendant reported the crime after a switch box alarm failed. Detectives recovered a butcher knife near the scene.
Two workmen were injured when welding sparks started a fire on the 23rd floor of the Woolworth Building in lower Manhattan. An all hands alarm summoned equipment, but many engines were later sent back due to revised plans and low water pressure required two 1,000 gallon pumpers.
Veteran actor Walter Huston dies at the Beverly Hills hotel where he lived. He celebrated his 66th birthday yesterday. Death attributed to a blood clot. His son John Huston was at his bedside. His wife notified in New York left for Hollywood.
An unconfirmed report says Chinese Nationalists urged Thailand to allow about 1000 troops driven from Kunming Province to rejoin hostilities against the Communists. The units are said to be stranded on Thai soil with possible deployment to Hainan or Formosa.
Allentown Pa April 7 a jury found Harold A Mohr 36 a tannery worker guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his 53 year old cancer stricken brother Walter last March The eight men and four women recommended mercy to Judge James F Henninger who delayed sentencing and said he would interpret mercy as not granting the maximum penalty
Assistant defense attorney Morris L. Shafer said the defense might not seek a rehearing after the acquittal and described the verdict as the next best possible outcome. Two of Harold's brothers Raymond and Ralph Coplay police chief were present along with the neighbor.
New York officials announced that travelers arriving from the British Isles who cannot prove vaccination within six months will be quarantined due to a smallpox outbreak in Scotland. Dr. Calvin B. Spencer reported 20 smallpox cases and two deaths in the Glasgow area plus about 4,000 people who had contact with the disease.
