Captain Frank M. Hawks, famed speed flyer, was seriously hurt at Grafton when his airplane failed to lift off on a mud soaked field. He was thrown free as the craft bounced and pinned beneath it before rescuers rushed him to Memorial hospital in Worcester. Officials blamed the muddy field for the crash.
