Casey urges broad reforms to Pennsylvania judiciary

Gov. Robert P. Casey calls for sweeping changes to how state court candidates are financed and for major updates to the Judicial Inquiry and Review Board. He proposes a Judicial Reform Commission, public financing for statewide judicial campaigns, tougher financial disclosures, and greater non‑judge lawyer representation on the board to restore public confidence in the judiciary.

New Cascade Park Tree Board proposal discussed by council

New Castle City Council and the Cascade Park Working Committee discussed a proposed ordinance to create a three member City Park Tree Board. The board would govern removal and planting decisions across Cascade, Gaston and Cunningham parks and oversee development that could affect the parks natural environment.

Thruway span collapses and a body found in car

The 200-foot section of the New York Thruway bridge collapsed dumping up to three vehicles into Schoharie Creek near Albany. One body was recovered from a car about 10 p.m. and authorities warned survivors were unlikely. Divers planned to search the flood waters once it receded.

Federal grand jury to review massive Ohio gambling raid

Federal agents say the All American Club in Campbell and eight sites staged the largest illegal numbers operation in the United States, financing a Pittsburgh mafia family with about 20 million dollars annually. The raid yielded luxury cars and cash, with evidence to be shown to a Cleveland grand jury. Dante Strollo, linked to the operation, was present during the raid.

Elderly couple survives two week snow ordeal

Orville Obendorf, 71, with heart disease, and wife Nellie, 65, a diabetic, were stranded in their snowbound car for two weeks near Norton Kansas. They survived on a box of Girl Scout cookies, soda, and prayer, saying they believed they would be found. They were hospitalized with exposure and hypothermia.

Law clears two highway jobs in Lawrence County

The $88 billion highway and mass transit bill enacted by Congress frees funds for two Lawrence County projects. A concrete replacement on about a mile of U S 422 from Rose Point Bridge to the Butler County line costs about $800,000, and a $400,000 resurfacing on 1.2 miles of Pa 108 in North Beaver Township will proceed. Construction is set to begin in late June after contracts are let next month.

Pilots Offer 4.5 Billion to Buy United Air Lines

Air Line Pilots Association says it will contribute at least 300 million from its pension fund to back a 4.5 billion offer to acquire United Air Lines. The unsolicited proposal was approved by ALPA executives amid interest in UAL Inc. and its Hertz and hotel holdings. United said the bid is an invitation to negotiate.

Teen Richard Boak Dies After Shenango Township Crash

An 18 year old county resident, Richard Lee Boak of AD 4 Old Countyline Road, died after a Friday night crash on snow covered U S 422. He was transported from Jameson Memorial Hospital to St Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center in Youngstown where he died yesterday afternoon. State police reported Boak lost control of his vehicle at about 10 15 p m Friday, crossed the roadway, and the details continue on page 3.
