In New York police traced a four year feud ending in the shooting of former Republican Congressman Ellsworth Buck by Charles Van Newkirk a former merchant marine officer. Buck 56 fought to recover from three bullet wounds as investigators gathered statements and records. Van Newkirk of Amherst New Hampshire was identified as the assailant by Buck and by Richmond County District Attorney Herman Methfessel who said the Marine engineer fired as Buck left the bar.
Dayton Ohio April 6 A westbound Baltimore and Ohio freight collided with a semi trailer truck five miles east of Dayton killing brakeman Bernard P. Smith of Hamden Ohio. The crash toppled the engine and five cars, cut power, and delayed body removal as live steam escaped. Truck driver Osborn O Coleman of Indianapolis was treated for shock and released. Engineer W H Silvey and fireman F T Seaberg both of Dayton and conductor J Walter Marsh of Wellston were found uninjured after initially reported missing.
Effingham Illinois reports the St Anthony s hospital blaze that killed 66 people may be the nation s second deadliest hospital fire. Fire Chief Frank Wilkins said 46 bodies were recovered and 20 missing. investigators consider paint a possible ignition source though the cause remains undetermined.
Suburban Northbrook couple Ward Clay Jr and Florence Clay perished early today while attempting to rescue Thomas McCracken Jr and Robert McCracken Jr, two babies trapped in a 10 room home. Clay saved his daughter Ann before reentering the flames. neighbors and state police failed to reach the children.
The House Appropriations Committee approved an additional 43 million dollars for the Berlin airlift. The move marks official congressional recognition of the air force’s transportation effort vital to keeping western Berlin operational amid the cold war.
Members of the Newport Methodist church will view the religious film The Passion Play in the church auditorium on Sunday evening April 10 at 7 30. The film portrays the betrayal of Christ trial crucifixion and resurrection. The youth of the church sponsor the event with a freewill offering to cover expenses. Rev James B Palmer pastor will be in charge.
The Washington pressmen's union halted work prompting all four D C daily papers to halt publication. Publishers refused to resume talks while the union demands higher wages and better conditions. Local No 6 president George T Walker noted no change in union stance as members met to resolve the dispute.
Sofia reports Bulgaria denies arrest claims against Vice Premier Trajcho Kostov as unfounded. A French wording in an official communique caused the misinterpretation that Kostov was arrested, tied to alleged attempts to supersede Prime Minister Dimitrov and his cabinet during Soviet trade talks.
Lawrence County unit of the American Cancer Society launches a national April fundraising drive with an $18 000 goal set by co chairmen Mrs. Blake H Waldo and Edwin O Feass. The target is a minimum community contribution based on national and state allocations. The drive emphasizes aiding cancer relief amid the nation’s annual toll. The drive filers plan to engage local supporters with the aim of matching the community’s share of national needs.
Mayor John F Haven proclaims April as Cancer Control Month in New Castle Pennsylvania urging citizens, institutes, businesses and groups to cooperate with the American Cancer Society campaign and promote early detection and treatment to reduce cancer deaths. The proclamation is dated April 5, 1949.
