International dispatch reports heavy fighting along the British sector of the Picardy front north of the Somme to Ayette. German attempts to advance were repelled with large casualties as French and Allied forces struggle to gain advantage.
On the war entry anniversary Americans repeat a loyalty vow pledging undivided loyalty to the cause of justice and liberty. Citizens declare readiness to sacrifice possessions, strength, and mind to serve and save America and uphold the Stars and Stripes.
German gains near Deronacourt and southwest of Albert were met by brilliant French counter attacks. The seventeenth day of fighting saw continued German losses. General J. Vochaired the Allied forces saying all is well. The Germans remained nine miles from Amiens as British lines improved at Hangard. Attacks across the Somme continued, marking costly efforts on both sides.
Germans launched a series of attacks along a roughly twenty mile front but failed to gain ground. South of the Somme the British remained in control, executing strong counter thrusts to blunt the enemy efforts.
Police investigated a rifle incident near limestone quarries on Butler avenue. A youth named Herbert Thomas was detained after an Italian quarry worker captured him. Thomas said the rifle belonged to Kenneth Allen and named Al Williams, with all boys ordered to report to the Mayor's office between 2 and 4 this afternoon.
City officials and employees will take part in the Liberty parade this evening. They will meet in the Council Chamber at 8 o clock and move to their place in line at 30 o'clock.
Ben H Williams former editor of Solidarity was arrested in Cleveland to answer a Chicago indictment related to I W W leaders. He is described as a lieutenant of leader W D Haywood and was held by federal agents after being sought for two months. He agreed to go to Chicago.
Mrs. S. S. McCreary of R. D. 7 Mercer Pa has knitted 13 sweaters for the soldier boys and continues knitting for the service.
Olive Kelly of South Jefferson street South New Castle Borough completed three fine sweaters for the Red Cross.$
Judge W. P. Barnum resigns from the common pleas bench in Youngstown to join the law firm of E. H. Moore and G. F. Hammond. Hammond is a known local figure, his wife being Miss McCreary from Canada.
Mayor A D Newell says the council will enforce a strict Sunday closing law though five patrolmen make full enforcement hard. Ordinance 1230 bans opening stores on Sundays with fines from ten to twenty five dollars and up to 300 days in prison. medical and charitable necessities exempt.
London observes the first anniversary of the United States entering the war with widespread American flags shown in public places. Crowds gathered as officials and residents marked the occasion with ceremonies and displays reflecting wartime alliance.
Thousands will march along East Washington street to Arlington avenue and back in a Liberty Loan demonstration opening today. The parade forms on North Jefferson street with Citizens band and police squad leading, under parade chairman O J Hartsuff and chief marshal J W Cunningham.
Former Philadelphia pastor J Washington Logue joins Joseph P F Guffey slate as lieutenant governor candidate in Pennsylvania. He endorses the party platform and supports national prohibition ratification if the senate deadlocks. Asher Johnston of McKean is slated for secretary of internal affairs with formal announcement today. S R Turner seeks congress at large with several other candidates to announce soon.
Washington April 6 Edward R Stettinius and Frederick F Kappel were nominated by President Wilson for second and third assistant secretaries of war respectively The new posts were created by a recent act of congress.
Death notice lists Frank L. Clark aged 50 of 420 Fem Street and connects to Mrs. Alfred Lamb aged 79 of Pleasantville Pa. An additional surviving contact is Mrs. Robert W. Stinedurf aged 44.
President Wilson arrives in Baltimore to review the 79th division of National Army troops hiking from Camp Meade. Thousands fill parks as the city, decked in patriotism, awaits his speech at the Fifth Regiment Armory and the nationwide Third Liberty Loan drive begins.
Eleven thousand Pennsylvanians will be sent to Camps Meade Sherman and Lee beginning April 26 under a provost marshal general order. The roll includes white and colored men with transfers between camps. Camp Lee will receive 6,197 eastern whites and 1,296 eastern whites plus 1,014 colored men from the east. Camp Meade will host 8,311 men including 1,296 whites from the east. 335 whites go to Camp Sherman. All will be called for general military service. Quotas by district are being finalized this week and will likely be announced Monday.
Cities rally with crowds and over subscriptions as the third Liberty Loan opens. Lynn leads with a three million plus subscription while New York reports ten and fifteen million in the early hours. Presidents and officials tour sites as Chicago, Boston, and several New Jersey towns report strong support.
New York reports more than 88 million dollars of Third Liberty Loan Bonds subscribed in three hours of campaign activity. Pledges for additional millions were received by phone but not counted until written orders arrive.
The nation marks another Liberty Loan drive as Treasury and bankers report strong public response. Lynn Massachusetts reports a three million dollar subscription on the first day, exceeding its two million nine hundred seventeen thousand allotment, while St Louis observes a full holiday as Vice President Marshall speaks.
German artillery again shells Rheims cathedral in retaliation for the shelling of German shelters in Laon. The bombardment targets a renowned sacred edifice as part of ongoing European conflict.
London reports an enormous clash in Picardy with nearly 200,000 German troops vs French forces and an estimated 30,000 artillery pieces. Including reinforcements and reserves, about 3,000,000 soldiers are said to be on the 90 mile front.
Rome April 6 Italy says it is prepared to counter any Austrian offensive. Italian positions along the Piave and Asiago plateau have been strengthened with reorganized and reinforced forces and high troop morale. Authorities expect a Teutonic renewal but have not fixed a date.
