In Middletown Pennsylvania residents respond to the Three Mile Island crisis with a brisk sale of T shirts bearing slogans such as Puke on Nuke and I Survived TMI. Businessmen profit while locals debate press coverage and reflect on evacuation fears and prayers.
UPI reports federal officials pin the worst US nuclear accident on a safety rule breach two valves remained closed two weeks before the incident and six contributing factors including design flaws and equipment failure. Recovery uses robot Herman to guide a controlled shutdown while residents return home and costs mount.
Edward C. Kelley, 20, of 502 Florence Ave, bound to court for armed robbery at People's Bank of Western Pennsylvania in Mahoningtown on March 16. He is alleged to be the accomplice of the actual robber who remains sought. Kelley was nabbed fleeing the scene. Nearby Texaco owner Dom Vivero fired six shots to frighten the getaway robber.
President Carter will address energy policy tonight including lifting price controls on crude oil by stages from June 1 to September 30 1981. He will ask Congress for a windfall profits tax and may announce a presidential panel to study the Three Mile Island accident.
Two New Castle men, Raymond L. Barber and Richard Lombardo, were indicted by the grand jury on charges of first and third degree murder in the death of Steven Lodovico of Ellwood City on December 2, 1978. An appeal to stay proceedings while a lower court reconsiders admissible evidence was filed with the State Supreme Court.
Breezy and cool with showers tonight turning to snow flurries Friday morning. Low in the upper 20s, partly cloudy, windy and cool Friday with a high in the low to mid 40s. Precipitation chances 50 percent tonight and 30 percent Friday.
Three 13 and 15 year olds staged a disturbance at the county Juvenile Home escaping through a rear exit after striking workers James Shenesky and Mary Kay Morgan with chairs. Morgan was treated at Jameson Hospital for a broken nose and eye injury. Two youths were recaptured, charged with escape. one with aggravated assault.
David Rossi of New Castle has been chosen Pitt Senior of the Year for 1979. A chemistry major with a 3.9 GPA, Rossi led Omicron Delta Kappa and Alpha Phi Omega, presided over Druids and Pitt’s ACS chapter, and fenced for the Fencing Club. His name will be inscribed on Senior Walk beside distinguished alumni.
