Mercer teen guilty of murder in uncle’s shooting
Herbert Heckathorn, 17, of Mercer, was found guilty of first degree murder in the fatal shooting of his uncle Clair R. Heckathorn, a 63 year old fruit farmer. A four man eight woman jury recommended life imprisonment after about ninety minutes of deliberation. The Oct murder occurred at a farmhouse five miles south of Mercer. His older brother James Lyle Heckathorn, 22, is to stand trial later.
