A U S Airlines cargo plane plummeted into Jamaica Queens causing a major explosion. Five people confirmed dead, including the two crewmen and a police inspector, with a sixth believed dead and eight injured. Homes were destroyed and fires lit streets as debris and gasoline flames flared.

Talks in a four state telephone wage dispute collapsed in Detroit after the union rejected a last ditch offer from Michigan Bell of 3 to 7 dollars weekly raises. The rejection jeopardizes a walkout by more than 18 000 Bell workers set for Monday morning and could shape wage demands for 33 000 workers in Ohio New Jersey and northern California. Western Electric 15 000 workers in 43 states were also slated to join the strike.
Partial production resumes today at B. F. Goodrich six Akron plants after a 38 day office workers strike ended. Akron drivers and mechanics strike against Akron Transportation Company continues into its fifth day leaving area residents without public transportation.

Tornadoes struck Louisiana Alabama and Florida causing at least seven deaths and 62 injuries with damage over one million dollars. Four family members died in Arnaudville near Opelousas and 24 were wounded. Wind speeds may have reached 200 miles per hour as a Mobile County Alabama school building lost roof and walls while empty for a holiday.
A Mobile collision between a C-47 and a C-124 Globemaster killed an estimated 15 servicemen. Authorities posted guards in the Main Gulf Mobile and Ohio yard as wreckage was examined for identification with uncertain counts and missing bodies.
New York April 5. The jury found Frank Costello guilty of ten counts of contempt of the U.S. Senate. He faces up to ten years in prison and fines up to $10,000, with sentencing by Judge Sylvester Ryan next Tuesday. The case follows a volatile trial ending with a mistrial motion and appeals.
Washington April 5 In a budget vote the House trimmed 32 percent from the state department budget. The final tally approved 216 million dollars for the department for the fiscal year starting July 1. The Voice of America and educational information activities faced steep cuts. A two million dollar allowance for international contingencies was retained.
The House approved a measure 120 to 66 to reduce the Paris based United Nations general assembly assessment as America’s 1953 UN contribution. An amendment to the state department appropriation bill cuts 2.5 million dollars from proposed international organization aid, limiting U.S. UN expenses to one third.
New York April 5 Chairman Nathan P Feinsinger of the Wage Stabilization Board meets with steel industry and union reps to head off a threatened strike. He flew from Washington and said he is prepared to stay until hell freezes over, but the 12:01 a m Wednesday deadline nears as mills begin banking furnaces tonight.
The 1952 Red Cross drive in New Castle shows $46 225.88 raised toward a $52 410 goal. Industrial groups are $9 000 short of the division target, prompting the planning committee to widen appeals to local organizations.
Ellwood City led Pennsylvania Red Cross drives with a total of 18 518 50 dollars, overshooting its goal by 8 118 50 and achieving a 178 percent rate. Lancaster records its first traffic fatality of the year as 65 year old Bertram Seiple dies after being struck by a car driven by Marion Miller of Pequea. Miller will be prosecuted. Seiple died in Lancaster hospital.
Cheltenham township police hunt a band of fur thieves in Melrose Park after three fur coats and an e mine store worth 15 500 were stolen from the home of Mrs. Julia L. Sanson.
William T. Hillberry 45 of East Leasure avenue killed his wife Kathryn Virginia 45 by slashing her throat with an old fashioned straight razor in their bedroom after an argument Friday night. Hillberry confessed to Police Chief Thomas Boyle and was charged with murder awaiting a degree hearing by Lawrence County judges. He is in the county jail with multiple police and city officials present during the confession. He said he was very nervous recently and could not explain the motive.
In Camden New Jersey three teens Charles Kovac 18 Joseph Hennings 17 and Joseph F Davis 17 all from North Philadelphia were killed when their convertible hit a parked oil truck at a traffic light. Brothers Edward Kovac 17 Thomas Davis 16 and Joseph Kelly 17 were critically injured. The truck driver Paul Williams 27 of Stroudsburg Pa. halted at the light and the car crashed into its rear, destroying the vehicle and throwing the youths onto the road.
