President Truman will deliver a midwestern Army Day address at Soldier Field Chicago outlining a strong national defense and vigorous foreign policy. Eisenhower and other leading Americans will accompany him as they depart Washington by train at 4 25 p m today for Army Day events.
Dr. Marcel Petiot, accused killer of 27 victims during Nazi occupation Paris, was sentenced to death. He claimed 63 victims in pre trial questioning while Laval chairs faced questions on executing him. The court declared him guilty of murder and the form of execution remains to be decided. Petiot proclaimed I must be avenged as he was led from the Palais de Justice.
William D Cobau head of the Cobau and Berry firm was named president of the Greater New Castle Association at the annual directors meeting in The Castleton hotel. Iver V Davis was named first president, Richard E Rentz treasurer, and Dr W Fitton Jackson secretary. The previous president Matthew J Lepere Mathews had served about 18 months before the change.
The U N Security Council adjourned until Tuesday after Russian assurances on Iran and plans to inspect Sperry Gyroscope plant at Lake Success, Long Island for possible interim headquarters pending transfer from Hunter's College. Delegates will report back within a week. approval hinges on ongoing diplomacy and Lie and Byrnes involvement.
Frederick Morris a 24 year old Chester man held as a suspect in the mutilation death of Rose Lyons Reynolds was found in his jail cell after a suicide attempt and placed on blood transfusions. Police said another suspect Grant Tyler 23 killed himself by gas in his home while Morris fate hung on. Authorities reported Morris improving as he fights injuries from an apparent throat slashing.

President Charles Dorrance of West Virginia Coal & Coke proposed throwing the dispute to a fact finding panel and have both sides abide by its decisions.
A convicted killer Earl McFarland 25 who escaped from a Washington death row remains at large. Police and the FBI circulated a 300 reward and wanted circulars nationwide as tips poured in about sightings. McFarland described as five seven and weighing 136 pounds with gray eyes brown hair and tattoos on both arms and chest.
Vincent Youmans celebrated composer of Tea For Two and Time On My Hands died in Denver after a long tuberculosis battle. He was 47 and accompanied by Mary Chase and R W Marland at his Park Lane Hotel apartment. ASCAP plans burial in New York with Deems Taylor to officiate at St Thomas Church.
Police investigate the slaying of Alma Murphy a mother of four and the apparent suicide of her husband James R Murphy in Bay City Michigan Detectives found a note beside a hat and coat on the Lafayette Street bridge directing police to 1906 Thirteenth Street where the wife’s body was later found stabbed in a locked bedroom of her home.
Washington April 4 Sponsors of President Truman's minimum wage bill abandoned hope of saving it. The Senate attached a rider to inject labor costs into the farm parity formula. the move led to a likely presidential veto. Senator Pepper called the measure completely dead and urged starting over.

Moscow radio says Lt. Gen. Walter Bedell Smith arrived in Moscow and was received by Premier Stalin. Smith carried a letter from President Truman, signaling a formal exchange. The report aired in London via the Daily Express.
Washington April 5 Angry lawmakers on the House agriculture committee condemned the OPA and blamed it for the nationwide meat black market. Rep Hoeven and Rep Flannagan challenged OPA meat chief Arval Erickson while Erickson defended that most meat sales are legitimate despite the criticism tied to wartime regulations.
State police investigated the death of a woman about 30 whose battered body was found in a ditch near Waynesboro Franklin County. The victim had bruises and scratches with marks on her throat suggesting strangulation. A rolled slip and faded blue coat were found near the scene as coroner preparations began.

Hollywood April 5 The death of Studio Electrician Faword W Gray 33 was ruled an accident by police after an autopsy cited broken pelvis ruptured diaphragm and broken jaw. Gray was found unconscious at the base of a 60 foot backdrop during setup for scenes with Anne Baxter and Claude Rains.
Washington reports stalled soft coal wage talks with a 10 to 14 day outlook for progress. Talks among John L. Lewis and bituminous operators resume at 9 30 a m on miners safety proposals after mediator Paul Fuller blocked a recess. Secretary Schwellenbach wants the conferees kept on the job to avoid further steel-output disruption.

Harrisburg April 6 The Kelley and Meyer Co of Youngstown Ohio received a 13892 contract from the State Highway Department for surfacing 69 of a mile on Liberty and State streets in New Castle Pennsylvania with work to be completed under state supervision.
