Floods on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers forced hundreds from their homes as sandbagging continued. Levees at Old Monroe failed under pressure and broke, with emergency crews responding to the breach.
Rain and showers afect upper New England and the Ohio Tennessee Valleys into the mid Atlantic. Elsewhere mainly fair. Temperatures range from the 20s to 70s with brisk readings in Chicago Denver and Seattle. notable highs include Jacksonville 79 and Miami 89. April 3, 1973.
United Press International reports three days into the meat boycott with ups and downs. In Davenport Washington farmers wives buy 4500 pounds of beef in protest while pork prices rise and beef prices fall at markets. Lions and cheetahs at Lion Country Safari in Irvine California eat fish and seem to like it. President Nixon promotes selective buying while dining with South Vietnamese President Thieu. Weather dampens turnout in several cities including Chicago where participation is uncertain.
At the Western White House Nixon and Thieu signaled Saigon can defend itself without U.S. troops, while avoiding commitments to resume bombing or troop increases. Ziegler dodged questions on resuming strikes as a joint communique hinted at general coopération without specifics.
