Soviet units crossed the Prut into Romania for the first time since June 1941. The First Ukrainian Army under Marshal Zhukov pushed into Axis territory along an 80 mile front, aiming at Jassy as the immediate objective.
Nazi fighter strength collapsed as Allied air power destroyed about 100 interceptors in the Steyr raid. A 300-ship enemy force attempted to halt the Mediterranean air force assault, but Forts and Liberators struck main targets, causing heavy damage to Steyr and its production. The day included the largest Allied air effort yet in the theater, with over 2,200 sorties and rail yard and harbor bombardments at Vicenza Leghorn and San Stefano.

John W. Quest aged 86 and his wife Elsie 76 lived on the Pulaski road two miles north of the city. Neighbors found their rural home a mass of flames at 8 30 Sunday morning. Herman Houk rushed to the blaze to rescue them, but the house was engulfed. Quest had been bedfast for years. grandson Dean Quest worked at Shenango Pottery and left for work at 7. It is believed Mrs. Quest perished in the fire.
Paul Louis Murphy Fireman first class, missing after action, is now reported by the Navy as a Japanese prisoner of war. The Scallpin submarine was presumed lost in the South Pacific. The family in New Castle and St. Mary’s parish receive the news via the International Red Cross.
London dispatch reports DNB the Nazi agency says American planes of the Mediterranean 15th air force daylight attacked Budapest striking the city center. It claims residential districts were hit and that 14 American bombers were shot down in the Budapest neighborhood.
Allied commandos isolate Japanese headquarters in northern Burma by seizing a 12 mile rail section north of Katha and blocking the Irrawaddy to cut supply barges. Air attacks destroy ships and aircraft as Stilwell forces press toward mop up in the Mogaung valley.
Allied infantry pressed a multi pronged drive against two Japanese bases in northern New Guinea. MacArthur said aerial activity was limited by weather but Allied planes dropped 200 tons of explosives on Rabaul. Patrols advanced along the Kabenau river tracking enemy units near Hansa Bay and Madang as Anzac veterans supported efforts.
David Clemons is held in the county jail awaiting a hearing Tuesday before Alderman Claude Mantz on a murder charge. He allegedly killed his father, Wilson E. Clemons, with an axe at 403 Ma honing Avenue early Saturday morning after an altercation. Clemons was captured at Farrell shortly after the crime and admitted striking his 57-year-old father with the weapon.
British sources report Molotov stated the Red Army drives into Romania aim to defeat the Axis with full support from Britain and the United States. The claim marks UN forces’ first direct land action on European Axis soil since Sicily and southern Italy.
Heavy United States bombing planes attacked Budapest today smashing railway yards and an aircraft factory in the Nazi held capital. The Fifteenth Air Force based in the Mediterranean also bombed railway yards at Knin Brod and Drnis in Yugoslavia as part of the Allies first response to Hungary's seizure by Germany.

Fire of undetermined origin caused about 2000 dollars in damage to the Elks Club on Crescent avenue in Ellwood City. Fire Chief Chester Vo Rodgers said the blaze started in the Blue Room and was confined to that area by prompt firemen.
