A weather bulletin forecasts snow for the Central Rockies changing to rain and snow in the south while rain spreads from Western Texas along the Gulf Coast to Florida. Much of New Fingland may see showers. temperatures remain near unchanged. City readings include Atlanta 46/64, Chicago 32/54, Dallas 45/89, Denver 22/31, Miami 70/85, New York 46/60, Seattle 37/59, and Washington 46/70. Western Pennsylvania should expect cloudy, windy, with a high in the 50s and scattered showers, plus mid 20s by night.
President Nixon hosts Nguyen Van Thieu at the Western White House for private talks on solidifying the Tolochina cease-fire and securing sustained U S aid. They plan a formal communique, with Agnew hosting in Washington while Nixon stays at his villa.
A massive tornado outbreak across Georgia South Carolina and Virginia killed eight and injured about 500. Georgia Gov Jimmy Carter estimated losses at 100 million as Athens bore the brunt with widespread outages and damaged homes. Fairfax County Virginia reported 32 injuries and damaged stores apartments and homes. South Carolina fatalities included two children in Abbeville.
Washington reports that NOAA issued a new regulation prohibiting placing radio transmitters on porpoises to help tuna fishermen track schools. A spokesman said the ban follows reports that some fishermen used porpoises to locate tuna schools.
In Cincinnati, Mrs Mary Evans reported a strong gas odor to Cincinnati Gas and Electric Saturday night before her three story building collapsed. Her husband Lee Evans and at least six others were killed, with about seven percent hurt. Five victims were in Al and Clara cafe on the first floor. others were in apartments. Names identified include Lee Evans 40 Pearl Martin 72 Francia Puckett 49 John Johnson 42 Robert L Stewart 46 William Pagano 82 Jack Froman 39. Mrs Evans stood in her first floor apartment with CGS rep when the blast occurred.
Saigon reports quote North Vietnam’s Tien Dan or Nhan Dan denying torture of American POWs. The party newspaper says U S reports of brutal treatment are propaganda to justify failures by American authorities and Saigon administration. It cites pilot releases and foreign journalists who observed humane treatment and argues prisoners were treated properly.
Lawrence County Coroner Howard Reynolds said Paul A Moarland 38 died of internal injuries after a one car crash on Pa 160 north of the city in Vickary Township. The crash occurred at 2144 yesterday when his vehicle left the road struck a millbox and guard rails then landed in a drainage culvert. Autopsy planned to determine cause of death the seventh traffic fatality in Lawrence County this year. A separate item notes Wendy Dunkel 22 a Penn Hills school teacher won the county title and will represent Allegheny County in the Pennsylvania pageant at Hershey in July.
